Enacted last year over labor’s opposi- tion, Bill 39 has since been repudiated by the entire labor movement in Struggles that have won wide public support. Reflecting’ this popular demand for progressive amendment of the act have been: : —The resolution adopted by the B.C. Liberal executive last October calling upon the government to “make it more consistent with recognized liberal, dem- ocratic and equitable principles.” —The speech given by Labor Minis- ter Gordon Wismer before the B.C. District Miners’ Union convention last December in which he admitted: “I know: the objections to Bill 39, and those made at the last session when we put it through, and through adminis- trative experience I know the force of some of those objections.” Wismer’s speech followed assurances given to trade union leaders that amendments _ sought by labor would be incorporated in the act at this session of the legis- lature. Now the government is seeking to repudiate its pledges. In Victoria this week were 200 delegates to the Labor Lobby organized by the B.C. Federation of Labor (CCL).
