LPP May Day Manifesto Good reason for confidence---cause of peace winning TORONTO “There is good reason for confidence on this May Day: the cause of peace, democracy and socialism is triumphing around the earth,” says a Labor-Progressive party May Day manifesto issued over the signature of LPP national leader Tim Buck. Full text of the manifesto follows: ‘ Peace is winning. After three years of war and destruction in Korea agreement has been reached to exchange sick and wounded prisoners of war. Still stronger pressure now can compel not only an armistice in Korea but a full peacefull settlement, and defeat of the reactionary forces who still seek to spread the war in Asia. This longed-for victory for peace in Korea can lead to the end of the ‘drive to world war which has ' the days ‘and nights of people throughout the world. It is the action of the demo- eratic and peace-loving people which brought the, renewal of negotiations in Korea. From the start made in Korea, there can be an advance to the recognition of the necessity. of peaceful co-ex- istence between the capitalist and socialist worlds, provided the peo- ple are seized with the idea that they can impose peace on the stock exchange manipulators, war fiteers and speculators who fatten on war. This heartening news from Korea came on the eve of May Day, the international day of soli- darity of the working people of all countries. Since 1886, when the North American workers cele- brated the first May Day by start- ing the struggle for the 8-hour . day, May Day has been the special day of celebration of the great unifying principles of the labor movement — peace and friendship between the peoples of all lands. « * * In the’ struggle for peace and the independence of Canada, the Canadian working class takes on new authority which will bring it to leadership of the nation. The working people of Can- ada need peace in order to raise living standards and win full employment. The labor move- ment rejects the cynical lie that we can have jobs only by pre- paring for war. _ -Peace can open up new avenues of industrial and agricultural de- velopment if the working people, supported by all democratic Can- adians, fight unitedly for people’s licies in peace. Along with world ‘peace the labor movement demands the restoring of world markets, an increase in trade, and freedom from the domination of US. dollar imperialism over the economics and policies of Canada and-other countries. _ World peace must be based up- on a Pact of Peace between the Five Great Powers, controlled dis- armament, the banning of the atomic and germ weapons,. strict observance of the UN Charter and the lifting of the crushing burden _ of arms taxation on the people. « * * To struggle for peace’ means: to struggle for the independence of Canada. ‘The rich men who worship maxi- mum profit, the ruling class of Canada, have sold our independ- ence for U.S. dollars. They have abandoned the path of the true, all-round development of our country and have turned us into a hewer of wood and drawer of water for the U.S. trusts. They slavishly support the Eisenhower- Dulles line of striving through war to seize world domination. The rulers of Canada have thrown overboard the banners of national freedom and democratic liberties. “On May Day, 1953, the people of Canada are faced with a strug- gle to regain the independence of our country — in every sense of the word. We must forge unity of the Eng- lish-speaking and French Cana- dian nations on the basis of com- plete national equality for French. Canada. * * ae May Day sees the people of the Soviet Union engaged in creative peaceful labors to build a Com- munist society, in which each will receive according to his need. With the Soviet Union in the march to this shining goal are the people of China and the People’s Democracies — all together al- most 800,000,000 people, one-third of humanity. They are building their new “Put Canada First. Peace, Na al Independence, People’s well and Democracy.” We call on working people to listen to candidates, to debate the issue to vote for the LPP! There is good reason for fidence on this May Day. a The cause of peace, democraey and socialism is triump#™ around the earth. tha In each country the workiit people are the true patriots defenders of the nation they built by their labors. 3 Peace and friendship betwee all nations will conquer wat national hatreds. es. Long live the unity of all wi labor in industry and on th farm! ; f Long live peace between al nations ! Down with the War mongers! Long live Canada, free, inde pendent and prosperous throvg” the united action of her deme cratic people! 5 Long live May Day, the 4! of international labor! a world on the principles of the common ownership of the means of life, the equality of nations great and small, the abolition of the exploitation of man by man, and putting human _ happiness above private profits. In Canada the danger of war, fear of tomorrow, the principle of Profit before Man, will give way to socialism. On May Day the working people remember that the goal of socialism is the inspiration that unites and guides the people in their pre- sent struggles. Through Peo- ple’s Democracy, the working class, the builder of Socialist society, will come to the leader- ship of our country. A Social- ist Canada will be united in the great common bond of human labor with all peoples of the earth. * * * 1953 is election year.
