_ {WIL | Dollars against Duplessis PUBLISHING a working class newspaper is no easy task anywhere in Canada, but nowhere is it as difficult as in Quebec, where Duplessis uses his notorious Padlock Law in an attempt to silence all voices of resistance to his ruthless regime. Combat, a bimonthly paper without an office, is beginning to rally the most patriotic elements in Quebec to fight back against Duplessis reaction. In the past year it has won over 700 new readers in all parts of the province, and its circu lation is still growing. < _ Appreciating the tremendous difficulties under which the staff of Combat work, the Pacific Tribune decided this year to make a donation of $500 to its heroic sister paper in Quebec. The Pacific Tribune — and Combat — can continue to live only through the generosity of the working people who contribute to our annual financial cam- paigns. Have you made your contribution yet? Bae 144 Press Builders Cash tu Berd red in $9,970 We still need Dear Reader: Wert by week the list of Press Builders climbs. We now have 144 supporters who have raised $25 or more, and we hope to see this figure reach the 300 mark with- in the remaining three weeks of the drive. Tom McEwen was guest of honor‘at a successful PT banquet held in Lake Cowich- an on Sunday this week, and brought back some cash and the good word that Myrtle Bergren is now an Honor Press Builder, having raised over $100. We have 16 HPBs, with Bill Hreher- chuk, John deWever, Ronnie Leblance, Frankie Politano and Dale Schnee still fighting it out for top spot. One reader walked in this week and donated his Hospital Insurance refund to the press drive. “It seems to me,” he said, “that many PT supporters will be receiv- ing their refunds soon and could. put this money to good use by giving it to the paper.” Well, what about it, folks? Some weak spots in the province and city have us worried. The small provincial centres are doing well, but New Westminster and Michel-Natal are quiet—far too quiet. We certainly hope to hear from them this coming week. Nanaimo, which was also lagging, picked up a bit recently and may do all right if they keep stepping on the gas. : : In the city, success of the drive now depends on industrial clubs like Victory Square, Ship and Steel, Electrical, Forest Products and Building Trades. A day’s pay from every press club member would be a start in the right direction. Remember, time is running out. Press club drive managers are asked to look over the figures below and then take the necessary steps to put all clubs over the top.
