ici May 7, 2004, marked another significant moment in the development of early childhood education services in British Columbia. In the presence of Mr. Richard Stewart, deputy for Coquitlam-Maillardville and minister responsible for francophone affairs, and some twenty partners, the FPFCB officially launched two new resources for fran- cophone families—the directory of British Columbia French language child care services (including both daycare and nursery schools) and a display of French language family and early childhood education services available in the province. _ Both of these projects were made possible by funding from the Office of Francophone Affairs of the British Columbia Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat, with support from the Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services, Child Care Policy Branch and Heritage Canada. The displays will be installed shortly in all CSF primary schools, as well as in the offices of francophone associations in the province. New resources for francophone families play groups, etc. Both of these new resources will be available shortly on the FPFCB web site. Francophone Early Childhood Education Centres Representatives of CNPF (national francophone parents commission), a national organization of francophone parents federations operating in minority environments in nine provinces and three territories, visited Richmond to discuss the importance of minority community investment in early childhood education. The CNPF representatives then introduced the notion of the Early Childhood Education and Family Centre (CPEF). These centres could be established in schools in cooperation with the neighbouring francophone community. The purpose of the centres would be to consolidate, in one location, information regarding French language family and early childhood education services available in the region and promote the development of new services in cooperation with local francophone organizations, depending upon the expressed needs of the community. The FPFCB has already approached partners at Ecole Gabrielle-Roy to determine their interest in implementing a pilot project this coming fall. This pilot project would involve experimentation with various strategies toward the establishment of a Family and Early Childhood Education Service Centre in their school. Of course, all of this is conditional upon the availability of funds.
