stow concn COUNC OCT 3 1977 LEISURE SERVICES COMMITTEE OS SE oe Te ot gia irs a The Committee recommends that the City ownéd land from Dorset to Lincoln and from Shaughnessy Street (formerly Chester)to the Coquitlam River be set aside and reserved as park land. 5A. wd The Committee also recommends that development of this park be phased as _passive park, much the same way as was done with Lions Park. konpa e, In order to ensure that this will be a passive park of the first order, the Committee recommends that no buildings be allowed to encroach on the least viable area, namely west of Shaughnessy Street. We feel that to build houses between the roadway and the river would be parallel to building houses between, say Lost Lagoon and the Stanley Park Causeway. The land in question, as outlined on the map is the only remaining land that provides both physical and visual access to the Coquitlam River north of the Lougheed, We feel it would be an injustice to the citizens of Port Coquitlam to alienate the’ proposed Coquitlam River Park by allowing houses to be built west of Shaughnessy Street asproposed by some members of Council. To follow that plan would result in unsightly fences, clotheslines, garages, etc. to face into this potential park. The Committee feels that this should not be allowed to happen. The least viable area approximately 450 feet wide at the northerly end, 100 feet at the southerly end. We feel that less than 450 feet is totally inadequate. Lions Park is approximately 450 feet from the dyke to the entrance. oi: sett DODD If Council accepts the Committee recommendations we will achieve the following: . LAA te 1. Focus public attention on this unique and valuable recreational resource, Enhance the recreational potential value of the Coquitlam River. SONS Be eats eta ot Prevent future Councils from tampering with the area thus preserving it for future generations. Link the existing parkland on the west bank of the river to this park. Preserve a continous and useful greenbelt from Lions Park to Lincoln Avenue. Lions Park is too small to serve our estimated future population of 65,000 people, R ray submitted, More .
