He's worried that the 50th anniversary TERRACE —We've all heard about the 450th an- niversary this year of the Alaska Highway. ’ But there’s another highway anniversary — the 20th for Hwy37 — and it’s in danger of not being recogniz- ed, says the owner of a resort south of Cassiar. ; “We've got to tell people we've got something to show ‘them. There’s not much time,’’?’ Mighty Moe of Mighty Moe’s Place at Cot- ton Lake said last week. “Everybody has to pull together — ‘Terrace, Sinithers,’’ said Moe who declined to reveal his true name. Known as the “Godfather Moe's migh of Cotton Lake’’, Moe has lived in and around Cassiar since 1968, What he wants is for towns and tourist information booths along Hwyl6 to spread the word about Hwy37, Moe hopes that a planned tourist booth at Watson Lake where Hwy37 joins with the Alaska Highway will help direct people toward the latter highway. Part of the attraction of the Hwy37 area, particularly where Mae lives, is its role in helping develop the Alaska Highway. Moe said heavy equipment was barged up from Seattle, taken up the Stikine River y challenge and on a rough road that now forms part af Hwy37 to help build the Alaska Highway. The 20th anniversary ap- | plies to the route that now runs south to Kitwanga where it joins Hwy16. “Oh sure. There was a road before but it was a logg- ing road and you had to go with a pilot car,’ said Moe. For his part, Moe has declared the July as flag month at his resort and he’s planning a S0-mile caneo race to draw people up Hwy37. Meanwhile, the executive director of the North by Nor- thwest Tourism Association says the 50th anniversary of , Rendezvous '92 could benefit the Alaska Highway called Hwy37, “‘If, quote unquote Rendezvous '92 brings in an extra 100,000 units, it will certainly increase traffic,”’ said Greg Meredith, His opinion is based on the circle route concept in that tourists will go up the Alaska Highway one-way and travel down Hwy37 the other, The North by Northwest Tourism Association and the Peace River-Alaska Highway Association are publishing a pamphlet this year on the cir- cle route, said Meredith. **There are already a lot of enquiries about Hwy37,’’ he said, But straight rules apply Room for. more river gui TERRACE — There’s room for a few more angling guides on the upper Skeena River but suc- cessful applicants will have to meet the standard, says provin- : cial fisheries biologist. Bob Hooton said the provin- cial branch is now accepting ap- plications to guide on what’s known as Skeena 4, the stretch of mainstem Skeena upstream - of a point 1.5km above the Zymoetz (Copper) River. Following public meetings last year, the limit on the Skeena 4 was set al 10 guides and 1,000 angler days (the definition of angler days means Join us for an 10 Sewiy E soa four anglers taken out for a single day equals four- days us- ed), Hooton said five of the guiding spots had been assigned at that time under what is known as a “‘grandfathering’’. That meant the individuals given guiding permits, and an accompanying angler day quota, had a record of guiding on those waters in the past. But those guides used less than one-third of the available rod-days. As a result, five guiding spots and an allotment of up to 700 angler days are on the block. CEREUS Ghat ied GUM GER gh As to why 700 days should be offered to five new guides when the same number of existing guides apparently needed less than half that amount, Hooton said the latter were operating on a number of different rivers, not just the Skeena. A new operator concentrating solely on Skeena 4 might therefore require more rod- days. He also pointed out ex- isting guides were also entitled to apply for part or all of the re- maining quota. Emphasizing applying did not automatically mean a permit would be issued, Hooton said Reservations Recommended the branch would use ‘‘a rigorous scoring procedure’ to decide who, if anyone, got them. At the very least, applicants have to be 19 years or older, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, carry $500,000 liability insurance coverage, show “familiarity with regulations and policy governing the angl- ing guide industry” and have no convictions under the Wildlife Act or any other fish/wildlife regulations. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 13 and no ex- tensions will be granted. “CHOOSE TO CRUISE” SWEEPSTAKES 112 Grand Prize Cruise Vacations!
