troubled Railwest railcar
manufacturing plant in

Rail will call tenders ‘'very
socn” for between 200 and
600 ballast cars and that the
British’ Columbia gov-
ernment will subsidize the
Railwest bid to ensure it will
be equal to the lowest
received.

The minister said,
however, that even if the bid
is won the plant, employing
260 persons, will have to
close for an undetermined
length of time beginning
Aug. 14 to enable receipt of
materials.

Phillips told reporters
that a 200-car order would
keep 160 persons at the plant
at work until February,

1978,
Railwest is a subsidiary of

the  provincially-owned B.C. -
Railway.

Phillips said federal

Lang met on Monday with
CNE and CP Rail officials

leader Gordon Gibson to
find out how many civil
servants there are in British
Columbia led Tuesday to a
short-lived confrontation in
the legislature betwden

Gibson said he had been
unable to obtain the
information through the

Finance. Minister Evan
Wolfe why this was
necessary, especially in
light of the fact that the fig-
ures used to be published
until 1976,

Wolfe replied that there

Gibson that the best way to
get the information was to
put a formal question on the
daily order paper and then it
would surely be answered.

At that, Opposition leader
Dave Barrett rose and told

and there was still no
answer.
