Calling the Meech Lake constitutional
process “morally, ethically and democrati-
cally wrong,” Native leaders from across the
country last week put their support firmly
behind Manitoba MLA Elijah Harper’s ef-
forts to block passage of the Meech Lake
Accord in the Manitoba legislature before
the deadline of June 23.

Leaders of the Dene Nation and the Metis
Association of the Northwest Territories,
Council of Yukon Indians, Union of B.C.
Indian Chiefs and the Conseil Attikamek-
Mantagnais told a press conference in Van-
couver June 20: “Elijah Harper, backed by

the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, has

decided to protect the interests of aboriginal
peoples and all Canadians, by resisting the
pressure tactics aimed to save a flawed con-
stitutional amendment. We welcome and
fully support the stand taken by the chiefs of
Manitoba and Mr. Harper.”

The groups represented first nations who
have negotiated or are currently attempting
to negotiate comprehensive land claims
with the federal government—efforts which
have been frustrated by the government’s
failure to follow through on promises to
entrench aboriginal rights in the constitu-
tion.

The. groups were backed by Frank
Calder, the first Native elected MLA in the
country and a former cabinet minister in the
Barrett government, who suggested that “75
per cent of Canadians support what Harper
is doing.”

Harper, the NDP MLA for Rupertsland,
became the focus of country-wide attention
earlier this month when he backed the stand
taken by the Manitoba chiefs that Meech
Lake should be killed and declared his inten-

tion to block ratification of the accord in the
