ram name a Aen eer AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 21, 2001 Nisga’a to obey moratorium | on shooting grizzly bears THE NISGA’A say they will honour a provincial mora- torium on grizzly bear hunting, even though they doubt the need for one. “Yes we will abide by the moratorium,” Nisga’a gov- ernment president Joe Gosnell said last week. The Nisga’a could have insisted on their negotiated tight to hunt-an estimated two bears a year, as set out in the Nisga'a treaty. Their concession means there won't be unequal tfeal- ment of hunters in the Nass Wildlife Arca delineated by the treaty. — The three-year moratorium on grizzly bear hunting that might be exempt. Gosnell said he was meeting with environment mini- Ster lan Waddell last Friday to express his disappaint-: ment wilh how the province handled the issue. —° “British Columbia failed to consult with-us as. stipuia- ted by the treaty,” Gosnell said. “It impacts on our abili- ty to exercise our treaty rights.” He said: the: Nisga’a will abide by. the moratorium even though he doubts grizzly Populations are in trouble, particularly in this region. Alcohol Suspected in crash SEVEN people were taken to hospital Feb. 15 after the driver of a Chevy Bla- zer ran a stop sign and struck a Ford F150, say police. A 20-year-old man from Kitimat was ticketed for driving without due care and attention, say RCMP. Police believe alcohol was also a contributing factor and are still invest- igating the accident. The driver of the Blazer was travelling westbound on Lazelle Ave. shortly before 3 p.m. when he failed to stop at the stop sign. He collided with the truck which was travelling north on Munroe, say po- lice. The truck sustained damage to its passenger side while the Blazer’s damage was confined pri= marily to its front end.
