the by Tod Strachan . ; ‘Will there be skiing at. Shanies ‘Mountain next winter? "Yes," ‘Says ‘Dan Matthews of ‘the Ontario- based contracting firm D.R. Mat- thews and Associates. "And you’ re going to be pleased with it." This may be a brave statement to make in the eyes of a few gun-shy Shames directors who have seen this statement misfire a few too many times. But Matthews has ~ confidence in the project. | D.R. Matthews and Associates have taken on the job of. putting the Shames Mountain ski concept into action and his optimistic answer to the age old question, "When can we ski Shames?", comes from experience. In Mat- thews words, "We don’t do it if it’s an iffy project.” And Shames jis far from "iffy", according to Matthews. On a scale of one to ten, he rates Shames at around a 1et ready to hit ames slopes make it work: like an arena or swimming pool, a ski hill is a - recreational facility, and to suc- cessfully build any sort of recre- ational facilty, the project needs the community behind it. According to Mat- - thews, you can expect to pay lift pass ~ roughly the same as Hudson Bay Mountain. But if it’s -a little more, don’t be: surprised. There are two ski hills in B.C. that . are in financial trouble at the pres- ent time because. they were under- ‘charging the public. They had great. potential, says Matthews, but ‘because they were undercharging they soon found they couldn't develop beyond the initial phase. In fact some years, they couldn't . even keep up with regular mainten- Bconomic benefit? Yes Shames will offer Terrace that, too, "Skiing is one sport the whole family can’ participate in,” says Matthews. And they’re all - going to spend money here. something around $21 a day fora ° But first things first. Matthews says the road to Kitsumkalum will be open soon and they'll be able to dismantle and rebuild the equip- - ment that’s there. At the ne time, he says they’re looking as far: away as Quebec and New York for . other equiptment. Then, in July or August the road to Shames will be complete and the job of putting all this equimpent in place can begin. When the mountain opens to the public this fall, the first phase may gue not impress some. But according to . Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 11, 1990 A3 = Dan Matthews (left) of D.R. ‘Matthews.
