The spires, spared from air raids in the Second World War, look down on the adjoining Hohenzollern Bridge just as they did that - December day in 1918 when the ist Canadian Division erosyed the Rhine to establish an armistice bridgehead. Ten miles south of the Dra- chenfels, obscured by, wooded hills, are the blackened stumps of the Ludendorff railway bridge at Remagen. Twice in less than 30 years this bridge fell into American hands. On thesame day i in 1918 that the Ist Canadian Division’ crossed the Rhine at Cologne, the 2nd. Canadian Division crossed at Bonn and the 42nd U.S. Rainbow Division under Gen. Douglas ‘MacArthur crossed at Remagen. The 1st Canadian Division occupied a dynamite factory and other industrial ‘plants thal still exist downstream from Cologne. » Canadian soldiers were billeted’ in’ places like Trolsdorf, Porz and Wahn.
