GREENWELL With the turning back of the issue of purchase of Shauughnessy Golf Course to the Vancouver Parks Board, it again opens up the ques- tion of negotiations or ex- propriation at a fair price based on the assessed value of the land. It is significant that the assessed value of Shaugh- nessy is only $7,500 an acre but the asking price per acre at the time of the by-elec- tion last June was $34,000 per acre. It is a fact that when it comes to the assessed value on homes of the work- ing people, it is based on the selling price of the property. Therefore why the difference, when it comes to the CPR? ‘It is true that the chief land evaluator, for the city, D. W. McQueen, came up with some formula _ for Shaughnessy, for tax pur- poses, but this did not an- swer the question for the working people of this city. How long are we going to be’ a benefactor to the CPR, is the question being asked to- day. If the assessed value of Shaughnessy is $7,500 per acre, then the true value, based on double the assessed value, is $15,900 per acre. This is the formula used for the small home-owner, there- fore why the preference to the CPR..: The Vancouver Parks Board should stand by the position they put forward: negotiate at a, fair price, and failing that, proceed with ex- propriation proceedings. It should be clearly under- stood that Vancouver needs Shaughnessy to make up for the shortage in parks, how- ever, the people should not again be faced with a “pig in TED HARRIS 757 East Hastings Si.
