Traboulvay The Corporation of the City of Port Coquitlam 2580 Shaughnessy Street Port Coquitlam, BC Dear Mayor Traboulay: As you are aware, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is seeking environmental approval to construct a parallel runaway to ease current congestion problems and provide future capacity. Your active, public support of this project, which is a key factor in British Columbia’s and your community’s continuing prosperity, is necessary to ensure the views of supporters are communicated to a federal Environmental Assessment and Review (EAR) Panel. Vancouver International Airport has become British Columbia’s window on the world. YVR not only serves as Canada’s aviation gateway to and from the Pacific Rim and as the western anchor of Canada’s domestic transcontinental Services, but is also the hub of a thriving regional network. In the last few years, British Columbians have turned to aviation as a form of mass transit. The impacts of efficient air services or of the problems caused by today’s costly runway congestion are felt throughout British Columbia. {t is encouraging to note that a number of communities have passed resolutions supporting the project and have advised the Panel. YVR is in the latter stages of preparing a final Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed runway, which looks at the economic benefits and cest, environmental and social impacts, and mitigation and compensation measures. Transport Canada will send the final EIS to the EAR Panel in mid- August. The Panel will distribute the EIS for public comment. If the EIS is deemed to be adequate, the EAR Panel will call for public hearings, probably in mid-November. Ref Canadii
