THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORE COOUITLAM BY-LAW NO. 1661 A By-law to provide regulations regarding signs. WHEREAS it is desired: To protect signs and lights erected for the direction of traffic from the effects of conflicting commercial and other signs; To protect the appearance and preserve the amenity of the various districts of the City which may be adversely affected by signs of inappropriate size, design or location; To protect the public from the hazards of signs of inferior construction or from inproperly. lecated signs; To prevent the confusion which may arise from the undue conflict of commercial and other signs, one with another. NO® THEREFORE the Municipal Council of The Corporation of the City of Port Coquitlan, in open ceeting assenbled, enacts as follows: DEFINITEONS 1. In this By-law, unless the context otherwise requires: AWNING means a temporary hood or cover which Projects from the wall of @ Suilding. BUILDING shali not be deemed to include a structure. BUILDING INSPECTOR means the Chief Inspector of The Corporation of the City cf Port Coquitlam and tncludes his lawful deputy. CANOPY OR MARQUEE means a permanent hood or cover whic’ projects from the wall of a building, but does not include a projecting roof. C2TY teans the Municipal area comprised within the boundaries of The Corporation of the City of Port Coquittar, or the Corporation of the City of Port Coquitiam, as the context may require, COUNCTL means the Municipal Council of The Corporation of the City of Port Coquitlas. PERSON includes a firs, association, organization, partnership, trust eexpany or corporation as well as an individual. PRINCIPAL USE means the main purpese for which land, buildings, or structures are ordinarily used. RESILENTIAL USE BUILDING means a dwelling; boarding, lodging or rooming ersiiory unit; fraternity or sererity house. ROOF LIX:. means the line nade by the intersection of the wall of the hullding with the roof of the building on whichever face fronts upon a street. In the case of a building with a pitched roof, the roof Line shall Se at the eaves level. SIGN means any structure, device, advertisenent, advertising device, or visual representation intended to advertise, Identify, or communicate inforsation or attract the attention of the public for any purpose and without prejudice ro the generality of the foregoing includes any synbols, letters, figures, {llustratioas or forms painted or otherwise affixed to a building or structure and any beacon or searchlight intended to attract attention to any comercial or industrial cperation and also any structure or device the prime purpose of which is to support, border, illuminate, animate or project a visual representation, Provided, however, thaz this definitica shall 10t be held to Include offictal notices issued by any Court or public office or officer in the perfornance of a public or official euty, or traffic control devices as defined in the "Motor Vehicle Act". SIGN, AREA OF means and includes, for the purpeses of this Sy-law, thar part of a sign acting as a frame or border. Where a sign has no fraze, border or background, the area of the sig= shal} be deemec to be the area contained within the shortest line surrounding the whole Broup of letters, figures, or ayzbols. The reverse side of any sign, ££ ~ 1s parallel to the face and does not exceed the area of the face, may be used for display purposes without it being included in the calculation cf permitted sign area, SIGN, MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF means the vertical distance measured from the nearest finished grade to the top of such sign, except that the maxicun height of a sign which extends or projects over a sidewalk shall be measured fron the sidewalk level immediately beneath such sign. Where a sigr extends or projects above the roof Line of a bullding the maximum height shall be seasured fron the roof or parapet level at the location of such sign. SICN, MINIMUM HEIGHT OF means the vertical distance measured froa rhe nearest finished grade to the lower linit of such sign, except that the ainisum hetght of a sign which extends or Projects over 2 sidewalk shall be ceasured from the sidewalk level imediately beneath such sign. SIGN AWNING means a non-illuminated identification siga affixed flat ro the surface of an awning and which does not extend vertically or horizontally beyound the Limits of such awning. SICH, PULLBOAARR meann an exterior atrncture displaying materiel of a general advertisiag nature, pasted or otherwise affixed flat co the face of nach structure,
