Paul Mathieu Atthe symposium, Paul will present material from his upcoming book on erotic ceramics. The book to be published by A&C Black in Fall 2002, is tithd SEXPOTS: Eroticism in Ceramics. It features the work of almost 100 comtemporary artists from all over the world, The book also contains two chapters on the historical context, Neolithic to the twentieth century, with one of these chapters focusing on the maiolica of the Italian Renaissance written by Catherine Hess at the Getty Museurn. Paul will present various examples, both historical and contemporary, to ilhwstrate a number of questions raised by this type of work in the context of political issues, popular culture, mythologies, bodies and organic abstraction. He will also set wp a small display of erotic ceramics from his collection. Atthe panel discussion onAesthetics of Form, he will collaborate with Clary [lian in an exchange of ideas on the importance of form and beauty in ceramics and pottery.
