B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 23, 2003 A woman name finally ei HERE. ‘N THERE. YVONNE MOEN A MOST interesting visitor to Terrace was an English woman named Skeena. Yes, I had the great pri- vilege to meet this de- lightful lady who was given the name “Skeena” by her father in remem- brance of the Skeena River. One might wonder how on earth would someone living in, England inherit the name Skeena. ; Well, it was some yeurs ago when: Skeena’s father, Set John. Bowen-Colthurst made a trip to the area and while here he panned for gold in the Skeena. “After he retired to Eng- land, he had given his wife a ring: made of gold from the Skeena River bed. Because he was so im- pressed with the river he thought it would only be tight to name his daughter Skeena. All through the years Skeena was growing up her:mother would often re- mind her of the history of the Skeena and tell her she must go to meet her river. nt WHAT’S IN A NAME? Skeena Bow en Colthurst from England, left, with Mi- d Skeena meets ‘her river chael Bowen-Colthurst, who operates the Water Lily Bay Resort at Lakelse Lake, and Georgiana (Gee) Suthertin fram Spokane. The flowers were pre- sented to the two ladies at the Terrace airport by the Hamer children. Her cousin — Michael and Melinda Bowen-Col- thurst of Water Lily Bay Resort at Lakelse Lake — had kindly invited her for a visit. So earlier this year after Skeena had retired, she woke up one morning and thought, “Yes, this is it, now I must go see my river.” She arrived June 26 at the Northwest Regional Airport in terrace accom- panied by their aunt, Georgiana Sutherlin from. Spokane, They were pleasantly surprised with the warm welcome at the airport. On Sunday, June 30 at Water Lily Bay Resort, Michael and Melinda en- tertained some special in- vited guests for an after- noon get together and tea. It turned out to be a wonderful afternoon of sharing many stories of the Colthurst family. Skeena and Georgiana returned home with a lot of wonderful memories and aparently left their hearts in Terrace. Georgiana (Gee) is the daughter of the late Capt. John Bowen-Colthurst (not to be confused with the other John Bowen-Col- thurst) and had visited La- kelse Lake as a young child. So her return to Water Lily Bay Resort was also a special visit filled with some memories of long ago. At the gathering on Sunday, Aileen Frank brought along a show-and- tell item, It was part of a wedding gift that had been given to her and her late husband Floyd when they- were married 65 years ago by the late Capt John Bowen-Colthurst. It was a plaque which read, “A wife should be sworn by not at’. Aileen said this hung by her door for 53 years. It’s always nice to meet interesting visitors that come to Terrace and to share their excitement. Thanks to Michael and Melinda for the invitation. A happy day to all, marinared (24 hours or more).
