The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 22, 1996 - B9 Records shattered at meet ZONE RECORDS were broken and personal bests were achieved at the Northwest Zone track and field championships in Prince Rupert on Mother’s Day weekend. A combined team of Terrace schools placed fourth out of nine teams from around the north- west. Smithers finished first in overail points, with Kitimat and Hazelton placing second and third respectively. Grade nine student Heather Kelly smashed the Senior Girls’ Zone record in tiple jump by a whopping 25 centimetres. Heather also placed first in long-jump. The grade cight girls 4x100 metre relay team shattered the Zone record by over three seconds. Team members included Dana Haworth, Chel- sca Fladhamer, Megan Corp and Shannon Chalupiak, The strong finishes continued with Aaron VanGelder placing first in high jump, Gaerth TERRACE RUNNERS are all smiles after breezing through =the gruelling Vancouver International Marathon, That's Dave Cater, Murray Warne, Sher- ria Hamer, Sharon Crawford, Ed Ansems and Merve Crawford in Vancouver May 5. Athletes clean up in Vancouver TERRACE RUNNERS really made their mark at the 25th International Vancouver Marathon, May 5. All five run- ners from Terrace finished the challenging 26 mile race with great times. The big winner of the day was Ed Ansems who finished first in his age division but the other runners also fared well. Murray Wamer placed 392nd out of 2300 runners with a time of 3:27.14, despite a leg injury. Dave Cater was 512th in his first marathon with 3:35.33 and Merve Crawford was 77ist with 3:48.04, Sherrie Hamer crossed the line at 3:38.19. That makes the second marathon in a row for Hamer to knock 11 minutes off her time. At this rate she could place in the top three in the 40-44 group at her next race. Part of the reason for the Terrace group’s success might be due to their support of each’ bitter. a * “Tt was a-lotof fun to have support group cheering one. another on,’ said: Ansems. ‘‘When' I raced by myself I just tan and went home, This time we could celebrate.”’ The runners hope to continue their remarkable success at the Kermodei Classic run at home, Saturday May 25, Bowlers 7th in Cranbrook FIVE BOWLERS from the Terrace region competed in the BC Special Olympics Provincial Championships in Cran- brook during the first weekend in May. The team, consisting of three bowlers from Terrace and two from Kitimat, finished seventh out of 16. The trip was made possible by a $5,000 grant from the Special Olympics provincial office, The next event for the local Special Olympics will be the BC Law Enforcement Torch Run June 9 at 1 p.m. in Ter- race. T-shirts are available for $12 from the local RCMP detachment, Proceeds go to the Special Olympics, Put your love life on course. eae Call 1-900-451-4733 Ext. 21 To listen to these area singles describe themselves and to leave them a message. At a charge of $1.99 per minute, Ear! first in the 800 metre, Tyler Daigneault first in the 1500 metre and Chance Healey first in both discus and shotput. Grade eight boys and Junior girls each fin- ished first in their 4x100 metre relays and Justin Keitch sandwiched two bronzes in the 500 and 1500 metre races with a gold in the Glory Day 10 kilometre run, Many other youths placed high as well and most had personal bests. Coach and teacher Dave O’Brien was impressed with the students’ performances. “This team was a pleasure to be with,’’ he says. “'They embraced the spirit of competition that is too often missing in today’s sports.’? O’Brien points out that the team is young and mos! will still be around next year, Only two of the competitors, Justin Keitch and Chance Healey, will be lost to graduation. The other young athletes will form the core. of the team next year, O’Brien credits the coaches: Doug Steele, Wayne Kuechle and Gord Buxton for much of Terrace’s success at the meet, “They infused energy, enthusiasm and in- Spiration in our team,”’ he says. The coaches hope to send Justin Keitch and Heather Kelly to the Provincial High School Championships later this year. Both students are dedicated athletes, Heather’s performance at the Zones would have placed her in the top five at lasi year’s Provincials. “That’s incredible for a grade nine student.’’ O'Brien says. Many of the athletes plan to continue training on their own and several hope to compete in the B.C, Summer Games. The coaches plan on having a community meet in late May. “Your Complete Automotive Supply Store” 4736 Lazelle Ave. (Just behind McDonalds) TERRACE, B.C.
