(3 for Fort St. James teens By MARGARET SPEIRS TERRACE WATER RES- CUE: team members are searching a Fort St. James - area lake for two teens miss- - ing since Christmas Day. Dave Jephson and two searchers first travelled to * the area Jan. 12 with equip- ment. including borrowed sonar gear, lo begin scouring the water for the youth, ~ Since then as many team * members ‘as possible have traveled back and forth from Terrace. filling in searching with jobs and other respon- sibilities, " “We're the first people on the iee every day and the last off every day.” Jephson suid last week of their duties when in Fort St. dames. The teens, Mathew Karey > und Kora-Lee Prince. were riding a snowmobile across the lake to meet friends when they went. missing Christmas Day. When they were reported missing, the lake had patches of open water but froze over completely when the recent cold spell hit. Searchers initially found snowmobile tracks one ki- lometre offshore that dis- appeared into an unfrozen section of the lake, leading * them to believe that the cou- - ple had accidentally ridden _ their snowmobile off the ice and into the open water. Helmets: and a pair of gloves washed ashore on the P Dave Jephson south side of the lake, lead- ing the team to scour that area, “We've worked towards and away from it with the wind and away front the wind.” Jephson said. The water rescue team had set up a 30m wide. grid on the ice with holes 30m apart, allowing them to cov-. ~ eranarea 300 by 300m. The lake averages. from 12 to 15 feet deep and, since the team is searching. through - 20 inches of ice. the sonar is a big advantage. “Awesome, It’s the only tool that can do it,” Jephson said, . The sonar, from Kongs- . berg Mesotech, “the only _sonar company in Canada, is a high resolution device “used by 11 teams of police, fire and search and rescue groups in the U.S. . The $40,000 sonar can ~ detect objects 40 to 50 me- | tres away’ under the ice. If it spots something, the team drills a hole, drops a camera down and shows the object to the team. “The camera verifies an area and verifies:a target,” Jephson said. adding the pic- dure is clear as a bell. “You can read a pop can with the Gameras we're us- ing.” A target can be viewed from a different angle if nec- essary. Jephson said the sonar can pick up a soccer bill sit- ~ ting-on the lake bottom. He hopes the team can stay until the teens are found but said the sonar will deti- nitely remain there until the | end. Ts Temperatures of just be- low zero and one day of rain have helped. - , The team is optimistic — and Jephson said the com-, munity has supported their efforts. “We're appreciative for their help.” he said. Two community = fund: raisers, collected = over $70,000 for the search. With the sonar’s resolu- tion, Jephson said the snow- mobile will be casy to sce. °"“Phe snowmobile — will jump at you like a big huge truck.” he said. ° 7 As of last Friday, Jan. 21, the team had finished their sixth day of searching.
