Lanfear is open. It has been debated whether © this watercourse is actually a creek or a ditch; several lan- downers have complained of erosion and want . something done. But to others, Howe Creek: is a resource that must be saved. For these people, Howe Creek is an area within city limits that is a haven for water fowl! and small _ Where To Find t animals, and valuable ‘for its ‘beauty and sense of isolation. For these differing views, it is also an area that will cause debate no matter-what is propos- ed. For many years there have been a number of proposals to ‘develop Howe Creek ag linear park. It would be about 50 feet wide and a mile or so long witha number of access points. Within its confines would be a parklike | setting with wildlife preserves, - picnic areas, and hiking and jog- ‘ging trails. And this is a pro- posal that, to the delight of many, may be getting closer to reality. tabetha cep ciais, ~ A few weeks ago Superinten- dant of Parks and Recreation Steve Scott, City Planner Mar- vin Kamenz and City Draftsman Jack Hepplewhite ‘walked the. creek from Kalum Street to Kalum Lake Drive. It took . about. four hours to make the walk through undergrowth and over a few existing trails, accor- ding to Scott, and the area is in good shape. ‘It, wouldn’t be that difficult to:build a trail,” he Says. There is a problem, though. - Scott says the city presently -owns about two-thirds of the land while the remaining one- . third is privately owned.
