Terrace Legion report by Roy Greening ; On June 5 there was a special dinner put on by Legion person- nel for some special people. They were the overseas veterans of WWI, WW2 and the Korean conflict, and the occasion was the annual D-Day Dinner. ‘Accompanied by their spouses in most cases, the greying veterans enjoyed a sumptuous meal after saying grace and toasting the Queen. Old friends met, acquaintances renewed and comradeship prevailed even. though, upon looking around, some saw empty chairs that their old buddies once occupied. However, tough old veterans are fatalists and accept the in- evitable as they did in battle so many years ago. Following dinner, which was — expertly served by Legion volunteers, a film called The Road To Ortona was shown. As the veterans warmed to one another after the film, other conflicts were remembered. One remembered “Torpedo Junc- tion’? where umnescorted mer- chant ships coming out of the Caribbean into the Atlantic were sunk at will by German U-boats. Another former member of an air force bomber crew recalled the hair-raising runs over Ger- many at freezing temperatures. One said, ‘‘We were young-and it had to be done.’’ Others at the dinner were deep in thought and not saying much but, in some cases, their campaign medals told the stories — stories that one can only guess at. Next year another excellent D-Day Dinner will come around, served unobtrusively by the Legion Volunteers, while more stories will be recalled by the veterans who may be looking at just a few more empty chairs.
