f ay) Terrace Review — Wednesday. July 8, 1987 Simulated disaster to ‘be analyzed by Tod Strachan | Terrace correspondent TERRACE — A simulated disaster. held at the Ter- | race Airport. on June 10 - will be the major topic of “discussion this week for the various emergency response groups who took '. part in the exercise. Airport Manager, Dar- -ryl Laurent, said that a ‘critique was done im- - mediately following the ‘drill to. examine the more obvious aspects. of the ex- -ercise but now that those involved have had some "time to analyze their part in the drill, a more detail- . ed analysis was required. “We want to go back "and contact all the people ~ sinvolved: and have an in- . °. “depth debriefing. We want oe ~. to talk about all the things . ~" that didn’t go the way. we . wanted‘and find out how ‘we can improve on. them -- ghould-there be an actual ” : disaster. That’s the whole ‘ purpose of the debriefing + = to really get down and . identify.the things that we - need to improve and try to ‘come up:with some sort of ‘a plan that’s going to cor- rect the problem.” --. Laurent said that once “this debriefing has. been - completed the emergency * “procedures: manual :would be updated to refléct the experience of the most re- cent drill. He said a copy _of the final analysis'would ' salso be sent to the Emer- gency Services branch of “Transport Canada who _ would examine the report . 3 to determine if the drill met federal criteria for this type of simulation and ‘ . then return a report: on ’ their view of the effec- ___tiveness of the response of the various agencies in- ‘volved: .. “It?s/all a learning pro- - cess. If one area such as - Prince George were to 7 identify'a problem during an exercise and correct it, ‘ then everybody would get a memo outlining the solu- ‘tion. That's one of the real. ‘ . advantages of doing these — everybody learns from them.” h _ “‘Hopefully we'll do the same. thing - again - next -year, It’s mandatory every. two years but I’d_per- sonally like to see it done . every year. You tend to ‘learn something new every time and the intent is to _have the best emergency response possible. -. *¥ou hope that nothing ever happens but if it ' dees more lives might -be saved.”’- According to Laurent, the last serious accident i in - the Terrace area was in the ’ late .70’s when a twin en- . gine .Otter crashed into Herman:Mauntain during . poor visiblity with the loss of all’ lives. ee an : “Glowing: Shark: » Ten years AROs' ‘scientists:found lea a previously unknown species of. shark with an enormous, glowing - . ‘mouth that apparently lures krill, a says Naaional | Geographic World, : } ee Supt gis EXCAVATION TERRACE — Work. will - fae ‘begin in earnest.on-Ter-'. - - race’s new sewage treat-; ment plant in about two weeks, according to the Terrace contractor | who _ filed the winning bid to do.. _the excavation work.
