And the cheering in the streets of Pittsburgh this morning — foliawing Wedneaday night's 4-1 victory over Baltimore Orioles which capped the rally from o 4-1 deficit in games — told how meritorious that per- formance was. It was Stargell, a mountain of a man, who provided the muscle and reliever Kent Tekulye — the thin man of baseball — who helped lock up the Pirates’ seventh- game triumph, Stargell'’s hits included two doubles and that two-run, sixthinning homer, Tekulve choked an eighth-inning Baltimore rally and set the Orioles down in order in the T’men By DON SCHAFFER Herald Staff Writer It was a great game if you were a Terrace Timbermen fan, The Timbermen really took it to the Kitimat Win- terhawks Wednesday night in the Terrace arena, trouncing them 0-4 witha alx goal second period. . The game was fast-paced and exciting for the first two periods, with a lot of fast skating from both . teams and, of course, lots of goals. The game didn't take long to play, either, starting at 8:30 p.m. and ending at about 10:45, The Timbermen got things rolling early on a power-play ninth — two on strikeouts — to clinch the fifth series title in Pittsburgh's seven championship appearances, The Stargell-Tekulve act capped one of baceball’s great comebacks as the Pirates became the. fourth team in history to make up a 3-1 deficit in a seven-game series, The others were the 1953 New York Yankees, 1063 Detroit Tigers and the 1925 Pirates. After Rich Dauer’s home run gave Baltimore a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Stargell sent Pittsburgh ahead 2-1, The Pirates added two runs in the elghth to wrap up thelr fifth World Series triumph in seven “T feel bad," sald Baltimore manager Earl Weaver. ‘We won 102 ball games In the regular seazon. We won 108 the whole year. We needed 109. We fell one short." It was the first Pirates’ firat series triumph since 1971, when the late Roberto Clemente led them to a victory over the Orioles in Beven games. Clemente later died when his private plane crashed on a merey miggion bounce goal at 3:56 of the first period. Blain Marleau of the Winterhawks took a crosschecking penalty at 2:22, and not long afterwards the Timbermen began to apply the pressure, Th paased the puck around we and finally Doug McVey got it out to Gord Cochrane at the point. Cochrane, who was outstanding on defence all night and finished with two assists, slid it to Greg Kurlok whose slapshot went straight past Roy Garb in the Kitimat mt MeVey put the Timbermen ahead 2-0 at 13:37 of the firet period, as he skated down the right wing and took a clear slapshot that beat Garb " appearances. 79-80 schedules This year’s Pacific Northwest Hockey League Season begins tonight in Burns Lake, where the Houston Luckies meet the Burns Lake Braves. Pittsburgh manager Chuek Tanner observed: “Danny Murtaugh and Clemente must be having a ball up there right now." Actually, death hung over the Pirates throughout the series, Tanner's mother died Sunday morning amd the manager's joy was certain to turn to tears today when he was scheduled to attend her funeral in New Castle, Pa, “We scratched and clawed our way to this day," said Stargell, hia voice broken and tears running down his cheeka. “We are family and that's not being sassy or fancy. It typified this ball clu iy Baltimore'a Scott McGregor, the losing pit- cher, was asked what he thought of Stargell, who waa 12-for-30 in the series, hit 400, tied Reggle Jackson's record for total bases with 25 and set a record with seven extra-base hits on three homers and four doubles. He aleo became the 40th player in series history — the fourth this year — to collect four hits in a'game. “I tell you, Mr. Stargell is one heck. of a man,” McGregor said. “You gotta Up your hat to them all. But we had a good season. I'm not going to pout. I may party, too.” The absence af the long ball when it was needed took ita toll on the Orioles. They managed just four hits . Wednesday night, snapped a 21-Inning scoreless streak with Dauer’e homer in the third, and finlshed with just one run in the final 28 in- nings. The Pirates amassed @1 hits in the seven games. The Orioles had 64, “Our hitting stopped," said Weaver, famous for his lineup switches and righty- lefty percentage plays. “We went stale one game too BOON, “We had just about every Move we wanted to make, but when the ball playera don’t come through, your moves don't look quite as good we It remained for Phil Garner, who hit .500 in the serles, to lead the Pirates’ batters, to sum up the team’s feeling: ‘Willie Stargell gets younger every. year. Winterhawks on the short side. Kurlok and Lee Marleau drew assists on the period-ending goal. The second period was a wild one, fost and rough, with nine goals scored by both teams. Kitimat changed goalies to give both ex- perience in the nets, and Clif Sherstabitoff was soon severely tried. He made several good saves before his defence let him down, The Timbermen pounced on thelr errors and scored three goals, Lee Marleau put Terrace ahead 3-0 with a goal-mouth- scramble goal at 3:15 of the second. At 4:09, Doug Linton be: got a goal from Kurlok, and at 4:24, the Timbermen jumped out toa §-0 lead when Greg Morgan combined with Joe Smoley and Chris Highland. Highland and Smoley passed the puck around behind the Kitimat netunmolested, until Smoley gave the puck to Morgan at the lip of the goal, Morgan skated across the goal and slipped it under Sher- stabitoff, who was left helpless moat of the first five minutes, Kitimat looked as though they would climb back into the game, scoring three straight goals. McVey took an interference penalty at 6:16, and it didn’t take long for Stacey Smeader to score off a nice set-up from John Riek at 6:25. At 7:09 Brad Riley of the Timbermen was caught for tripping, allowing the Winterhawks their second straight powerplay - opportunity, This led to their second straight powerplay goal at 9:35, .when Randy Schooley beat Terrace goalle Jerry Lamming on the short side. Terry Godfrey got an assist. Kitimat got within two goals at 13:17 right off a faceoff, when Kevin Track won the draw to the right of Lamming, got the puck to Mark Schooley and Schooley slapped it in. ‘This was as close aa the Winterhawks got, though, because the Timbermen got the prettiest goal of the night soon after. Dave Sharpe got ‘hls first goal of three at 14:64. Linton and Riley broke down the ice on a 2-on-1 with Sharpe following. Riley passed off to Linton, who drew the defenceman to him, Linton then slid the puck ta Sharpe, who waa in all alone. Chris Godfrey of the Winterhawks took a crosschecking penalty at 17:38 of the second, and 28 seconds later McVey got his second goal of the night on the powerplay. Cochrane started the play at the paint, shooting the puck behind the net where Lee Marleau picked it up and passed It in front of the net to McVey, who slid it between Sher- stabitoti’s pads, The Timbermen ended the period’s scoring with the 8-3 goal, on another pretty passing play. New Tim- rman Frank McKendry poked the puck away from two Winterhawk defencemen toward Linton, who took the puck over the blueline and slid it back to McKendry. McKendry gave it to Sharpe, who was in behind the goalie again, and all he had to do was poke it into the empty ne The third period was uneventful for the most part, but this could have been an after effect of the excitement of the second. Terrace made the score 9-3 on Sharpe’s third goal, another flashy play. Kurlok drew his third asgist of the night when he sent Linton and Sharpe off on a two-on-one, Linton again gave the puck to Sharpe who deked firat the defenceman and then the goalie to score, at 3:49. Kitimat got their fourth goal when the Timbermen fell asleep toward the end of the period. Dan Fournier was bet up nicely in front of the net by Rich, who passed the puck out in front of the net. Smeader also ot an assist on the play, which came with only = 1:39 remaining in the game. The 94 final, which tells how well the Timbermen played, really does no justice to the Winterhawks, who, had it not been for two defensive collapses in the second period, would have been much closer. The Winterhawks skated with the Timbermen for over two periods but had dead spots in their game, which allowed the Timbermen to show an appreciatlye home-town crowd of about 300 how well they are capable of playing. The Timbermen were without five playera who are expected to be regulara throughout the season, We are pleased to announce that we have moved to Terrace.
