Bob Cooper of Terrace was the outstanding figure in this game as he dented the twine four times, one in the first period, once in the second and twice in the third. Kamloops took a four goal lead in the final game before Terrace could get untracked and at the end of the first period it was 4-1 for Kamloops. Terrace came out flying in the second and outscored Kamloops four to two, drawing within two goals at the end of the period. Kamloops scored four more in the third as the tired Terrace team wilted under their relentless attack. Terrace could only manage one marker in the final frame, This was the third game of the day for Terrace and the first for Kamloops. Over 800 people were on hand to witness the final game of the tournament. The Most Valuable Player award went to Ernie Paetsch of Prince Rupert, Best Goaltender to Joe. Florence of CPA, Best Defenseman was Randy Villeneuve of Kamloops and Best Forward went to Dan Rota of Kamloops. The All Star tearn was goal, Joe Florence(CPA); defense, Marcel Tookenay (Terrace) and Randy Villeneuve (Kamloops); left wing, Darrel Zelinski (Kamloops); centre, Dan Rota (Kamloops); right wing, Rae Rowe (Terrace). KAMLOOPS 11 SMITHERS i Kamloops-Shuswap Merchants scored one in the first, seven in the second and three more in the third to blast the Smithers team 11-0 in the first game of the tournament, Lorne Grennen picked up a hat trick for Kamloops in this game and Randy Villeneuve added two goals and two assists. Darrel Zelinski also had four points. Kamloops outshot Smithers 45 to 15. TERRACE 9 KITIMAT 6 In the second game of the tourney Terrace won over Kitimat, scoring three straight goals in the third period to wrap up the vic- tory. Rick Lewis fired two goals and Picked up one assist as did Rino Michaud io lead Terrace to victory. Rick Wakita scored two and added an assist for Kitimat in a losing cause. CPA 4 HAZELTON 0 The late arrival of CPA delayed this game by eight hours and the coast team only had three hours sleep before game time, still they had enough to win over Hazelton. Good goaltending by Joe Florence was the margin of victory as the Hazelton squad outshot CPA 35 to 29 Dennis Minns scored two; one in the first and one in the third to lead his team, CPA, to the win. PRINCE RUPERT 3 ’ PRINCE GEORGE 2 Game number four was one of the closest of the tournament. Each team scored one in the first period, the second was scoreless, but Prince Rupert outscored Prince George 2-1 in the third. Ernie Paetsch played the first of many outstanding games in the Rupert nets. QUESNEL 9 CASSIAR 1 The fifth game of the event saw Quesnel score six goals in the final frame to wipe out the hapless Cassiar team by a 9-1 count. Cassiar who have natural ice in their arena have had only three days of practice this year due to milk weather con- ditions and were no match for the Quesnel squad. _ Lorne Perry was the scoring hero of this game with four _ goals and one assist. KITIMAT 9 SMITHERS 6 Exit Smithers, this was the second loss in the double knoekout tourney for the Smithers sextant and bounced them out of the picture. Rick Wakita was again the scoring leader for Kitimat as he picked up another three points. Once again Kitimat scored most of their points in the third period, four of the nine. KAMLOOPS 19 STEWART | For the second game in a row Lorne Brennan scored a hat trick to lead Kamloops. Randy Villeneuve chipped in with two goals and three assists and Dan Rota picked up three goals and three assists. This was strictly no contest as the Kamloops team completely dominated the game from start to finish. PRINCE GEORGE 3 HAZELTON 3 This game was tied after the first frame but Prince George scored five times in _ .the second to build up a commanding lead. ‘The period ended 7-3 for Prince - George. Scoring was evenly distributed between the George players. Mike Lazotte was a standout for Hazelton and Dave Bellamy for George. After this loss Hazelton was out, CPA 3 TERRACE 2 This was one of the closest games of the entire tour- nament, Shots on goal were 28 for CPA an Terrace. Brien Mammel scored with less than two minutes remaining in the contest to give CPA a 3-2 victory. CPA led 2-1 after the first frame. The second period was scoreless. Terrace tied the count at 2-2 midway through the third, setting the stage for Mammel’s winning marker. Bob Fredrick scored two of the CPA goals. CASSIAR $ STEWART 7 This was the fina] game of the tournament for Stewart as this was their second loss. Stewart led 3-2 at the end of the first period but Cassiar found the range in’ the second, scoring six times to three for Stewart and wrapping up the victory. The two teams each scored one in the final frame. John Drzimotta was the scoring hero for Cassiar with his three goals and one assist. Dave Prokopchuk scored three for Stewart. PRINCE RUPERT 14 QUESNEL 3 Quesnel suffered their first defeat of the weekend in game number 11. Prince Rupert fired 44 shots at the Quesnel cage for their win. Doug Sheppard, one of the many outstanding players in the tourney, scored twice and picked up an assist to lead Rupert. Kevin Devito played a very fine game in the Quesnel nets. . TERRACE 3 KITIMAT 2 Kitimat held a one goal lead at the end of the first frame but could not hang on as Terrace scored one in each of the second and third periods to win. Steve ‘Dillabough scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Terrace team in scoring. This was a close checking affair with Terrace out- shooting Kitimat 20 to 14. Exit Kitimat. 26 for KAMLOOPS 2 CPA 1 Joe Florence in the CPA nets played his finest game of the tourney in this one as Kamloops fired 42 shots at him, many of them labelled. But Joe was equal to the occasion for all but two. Kamloops completely dominated this game and but for Florence’s fine performance would have won by a much. larger margin. Kamloops players Darrel Zelinski, Dan Rota and Randy Villeneuve again were the dominating figures in the game. PRINCE GEORGE 8 QUESNEL 2 . Quesnel bowed out after this one. Prince George fired three goals in the first, three in the second and scored two in the third, completely dominating the contest. All Quesnel could manage was two-goals — one in the first and their last in the second. Glen McEachern led the Prince George attack with two goals and one assist. CPA 11 CASSIAR 5 CPA really turned it on for this one, scoring five times in the first’ period, twice in the second and added three more in the third. Cassiar had two markers in the first, two more in the second and one in the final frame. Wayne Basford scored three straight goals in the third period to lead CPA to their 11-5 victory. Dennis Minns also picked up three points for CPA with a goal and two assists. John Drimotta had three assists for:'Cassiar who suffered their second loss and were out. KAMLOOPS 7 PRINCE RUPERT 4 Prince Rupert took their first loss of the weekend against Kamloops who outshot Rupert to the tune of 58-11. Ernie Paetsch probably won the MVP trophy in this game alone. Kamloops just kept coming at him time after time. Ernie stopped 19 shots in the first, 19 in the second and 20 + in the third. Dan Rota was - again one of the best on the ice for Kamloops. ~ TERRACE 4 PRINCE GEORGE 3 Terrace All Stars scoreda wer play goal with 5:45 eft in the game and held on for the rest of the match for a hard earned, well deserved victory. Terrace had a one goal lead after the first. Prince George tied the Photos by Dave Hamiiton ' count before the second period ended. Terrace went ahead again in the third only to have George te the game again. Larry Hackman provided the heroics, flip- ping in Marcel Tookenay’s pass. Dick Shinde chipped in with two assists. This was Prince George’s second loss of the weekend and were on their way home. PRINCE RUPERT 3 CPA 2 The young Prince Rupert team played their best game of the tourney in this one, battling toe to toe with the bigger and more ex- perienced squad from Vancouver. Ernie Pretsch was again the dominant figure as he turned aside 36 CPA shots. Prince Rupert had a two goal lead after the first period, coming from behind ‘as CPA scored the ‘The Herald - Sports Section Jayeee Commercial Tournament Terrace number two inB.C. first marker of the contest. The second frame was scoreless and each of the teams found the range once. in the final frame, CPA fired 15 shots at the Rupert cage in the final period but eould not stave off elimination from the tournament, TERRACE 4 PRINCE RUPERT 3 Prince Rupert finally bowed out of the tourney but not until they put up a great fight against Terrace. Goaltending was again terrific for the Rupert squad. Paetsch was ‘hurt by a high hard shot at the 12:20 mark of the second period. In came Ray Cossetti and played a strong game the rest of the way. Rae Rowe scored with less than seven minutes left in the game and put Terrace into the finals with Kamloops. KAMLOOPS 11 TERRACE 6 Avery tired Terrace team took to the ice against the smooth skating and passing squad from Kamloops. Kamloops had a four goal lead by the end of the first period and at one’ time enjoyed a 4-0 lead. Terrace scored four in the second frame and Kamloops scored three, ending the period with a 7-5 lead, Kamloops Shuswap Merchants are $1,950 richer today and the proud passessor of the Herald Trophy after their fine showing in the Second Annual Jaycees Invitational Commercial, Hockey Tournament. ; The Terrace Jaycees must be congratulated on the way this tourney was-~- run. Most of the teams assure us that they will be back again next year with stronger clubs.
