IT’S NO secret: hospital walis are usually pretty drab, and the patient rooms at Mills Memorial Hospital are na excep- tion. Painted in dull, institutional colours like beige or grey, it’s enough to make a sick patient feel worse — especially if you're achild. * ti Fortunately, somebody at the Royal : Canadian Legion decided it was time for a facelift at. Mills Memorial, where two rooms used for pediatric patients are go- ing from blah to beautiful: “J just thought that the kids needed something nicer to look at,” said legion member Keith McAra, who is spearhead- ing the repainting project. “Its bad enough being in the hospital.” Hospital administration and nursing staff agreed..So when McAra and Branch 13 offered to repaint two rooms for child patients, the hospital said yes - cven though the rooms are temporarily out of commission. While Mills. doesn’t have a separate pediatric ward, “These, we hope, will be kept more or less for children, if they can do it,” MecAra said. He and two other legion members, John Dewacht and Doug Misfeldt, did the KEITH MCARA, left, from the Royal Canadian Legion and Mills Memorial Hos- pital’s Choily Boland examine one of two hospital rooms for children which have been repainted to make them more appealing. This room has taken on a safari motif thanks to Gail Turner-Sears and Marg Skead. They patcted and primed the walls in both rooms - a bigger job than it might sound. Over the years, hospital beds had gouged some fairly substantial dents in the walls. , Now, gleaming under fresh coats of bright paint, the once-drab, pitted walls are as good as new. The paint job itself is being left up to the experts - visual artists Lynn Nord- strom and Gail Turner Sears. Nordstrom is painting room No. 205 into a vibrant, undersea fantasy, complete with cartoon-friendly. creatures like fishes, and a whale. Turner-Sears, with the help of Marg Skead, has turned dingy old room No. 215 into a vivid African safari. A tall giraffe towers over a black and white-striped ze- . bra on a bright blue wall. A lanky monkey painted against an orange wall swings playfully from a curtain rod. And it turns out the transformation May just be the beginning. The Kinsmen Club of Terrace is join- ing forces with the legion to repaint two more rooms. “We're hoping other organi- zations might jump in and do the same,” McAra smiles, More people have epilepsy than M.S., Muscular Dystrophy and Cerebral Palsy combined.
