A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 21, 2001 Square Is price of drive- through donuts TIM HORTON’s wants to add a drive-through to its Lakelse Ave. outlet. And Terrace city coun- cil has tentatively agreed to close the adjacent sec- tion of Ottawa. St. to allow that to happen. The road closure bylaw — which is subject to a public hearing in January — got initial readings last Tuesday. The portion of Ottawa St. from Lakelse to the alley would become part of Tim Horton’s property. But city planner David Trawin said it would be developed inte a town square, with brick work, park benches, tables and landscaping. The deal struck be- tween the city and Tim Horton’s calls for an esti- mate of the land value to be prepared, , The restaurant would then be required to invest that amount of money into — the town square develop- ment, and would pay to maintain it in the future. “It's not really utiliz- able by anyone,” Trawin- said of the land. It can’t be used as a building because of the aumber of city services underneath the asphalt. That means the only other USES were aS & Streef or parking. : Users of the square will be adjacent to idting cars. in the drive-through line, Trawin admitted. “It’s not optimal,” he said. “But it’s a downtown square. You’re going to get noise from vehicular traffic and your normal downtown noise anywhere.” He predicted it will be well used. ! He noted numerous tourists are often crowded around Tim Horten’s two small outdoor tables in the summer when tour buses stop there. “It’s going to be really nice,” predicted Tim Hor- ton’s owner Brian Archi- bald. “We're going to doa first-class job on it.” © By only closing half the Street, other. users of the back alley could still use the remaining section of Ottawa to connect to La~ zelle Ave. Prior requests — once this year and. five years ago — by Tim Horton’s to develop a drive-through there had been rejected by council. But further discus- .- sions this year led to the. . compromise. oe Archibald said the new drive-through will. take pressure off the donut) 9.” : shop's Kalum St. drives 0) through. “We'll be looking: at. a spting development: hope- fully,” Archibald said. - Happy 75th : A COMMITTEE to set up. celebrations noting the 75th anniversary of Ter- race’s incorporalion is slowly becoming active, City councillor Rich McDaniel, who is. the.” city’s liaison on the com- mittee, said a chair is act- - ively being pursued, : “I's someone we know. -.” can do a good job,” said McDaniel in declining, for” naw, to reveal the person’s © name. ; a Founded in 1910 .by George Little, Terrace was officially. incorporated. - Dec. 31,1927, : ey That makes 2003 its an niversary year and ia event is being planned for. each month of that: year, . said McDaniel. © 0: A broad cross séction of. people have‘already atten ded initial committee “or-. ganizing _ meetings, h said, “We will be involving: lot of people and: groups," McDaniel added.
