Furniture maker sadly missed GREETINGS! I would like to start this new year by sending best wishes to everyone near and far. | wish for good health and happiness to all. Unfortunately, I have to start with a sad note this — year. A very good friend, Herman van den Hende, passed away Dec, 13 sud- denly after a very short battle with cancer. Herman had lived in Terrace since 1952. Herman was born July 10, 1920 in Aude Pekela, Hol- land. He came from of fam- .. ily of eight children — four de boys and four girls. Herman grew up in Hol- land, and when he finished school he took a special car- pentry course, becoming a furniture maker. He worked alongside his father, who was also a car- penter. Together the two built churches and furniture. In 1947 Herman met his wife, Alida Maria. Both were members of the church choir. On August 28, Herman and Alida married at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Groningen, Hol- jand. This would have been their 49th year of marriage. The couple moved to Can- ada in 1952 with their — young daughter ~— Leidi. Herman's sister Emma and her husband Tom Julseth were already living in Ter- race, so they lived with them for the first months in their home on Kalum St. Herman and Alida bought the property next door to the Julseths and built a home at 2510 Kalum, where Alida still lives today. When Herman first came to Terrace he worked in the Sande Lumber Mill. Later he switched jobs and went to work at Terrace Transfer, owned by Tom Julseth. Eventually he started his own business, making furni- ture and doing carpentry jobs. _ Alida was busy working for several local doctors, cleaning their offices. Herman’s funeral service was held on Dec, 16 al the Sacred Heart Church. Father John Smith officiated. Herman is survived by loving wife, Alida, daughter Leidi of Prince George and grandchildren Brad and Car- son. He is also survived by three sisters, one sister-in- Jaw, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. And now I'd like to ex- press my sorrow to Alida van den Vende at the loss of her husband.
