A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 5, 1996" High-tech project to speed medical care YOU'RE IN DEASE Cake, It’s winter and you slip on the ice, badly sprain- ing your ankle, Naturally, you head to the doctor where X-rays are taken and sent away for analysis. Your ankle is taped up and you are sent home. Two weeks later, you’re still in pain and the results come back — your leg is actually broken, This can happen in rural or isolated communities in the north where trained radi- ologists aren’t based in each and every community to” diagnose problems based on X-ray results, But this will soon change as the northwest acquires a teleradiology. system that'll be the most extensive of its kind in Canada. Teleradiology refers to the transmission of X-ray, CAT scan, MRI,-or wltra- sound images over phone lines. This will enable radi- ologists to make diagnoses from acentral location. “It is unreasonable and unacceptable to have to wait for two weeks to get a diag- nosis,” says Dr. Robert Morrison, chairman of the. technical sub-committee that is overseeing . the project. “In two weeks you've elther gotten. better or you've been transferred someplace else or you've died - and by that time, who cares?” - _ The project involves sct- ling up advanced computer transmitting stations in sev- en small communilies: Masset, Queen ‘Charlotte City, Stewart, Dease Lake, New Aiyansh, Hazelton and Houston. ~~ These locations can then send the images to receiving stalions set-up in Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Smithers fordiagnoses, “Instead of taking radiol- ogists to the images, you're taking the images to’ the radiologist,” says. Thomas Hough, a Kodak representa- tive. Kodak was one of four companies that presented teleradiology systems. at Mills Memorial Hospital here last week. “Think of the transmitter as like a super high-tech fax machine,” says Hough. Fishing fines up ten-fold THE B.C, SPORTS fishing regulations have been changed this year to in- erease the fines for over- limit catches. Conservation officer Ken Fujino says that people are being caught off guard by the increases, some of which are substantial. ‘A local resident was recently fined $400 for being six crabs over the limit’’ Fujino says. “‘All the fines have gone up.” Last year’s maximum was $100 for over-quota fishing, But this year the fines have been changed to charge for every extra fish. It’s now $100 for the infrac- tion and $50 for every fish beyond the limit up to $1000, “The changes apply to most sport fish,’’ says Fujino. ‘It doesn’t matter if i's a salmon, a ling cod ora erab,”’ Fujino points out that people should be aware that those two extra fish they catch beyond their quota could end up costing them $200. “You can send high quality images at-very fast speeds, What would take up-ta two weeks now only. takes 15 minutes.” Hough says this not only make’s the patient's life cas- ier, but it also saves doctors . time and prevents complica- tions that could result from waiting for the proper treatment. ‘Sixty per cent of the $1.2 million price (ag for the pro- ject comes from the pro- vince with the remainder coming from the area’s new regional health board. ‘The system could be run- ning as early as’ July or August and Dr. Morrison says that it’s about time. “We will be able to pro- vide the same radiology ser- vices in the north as they get in Vancouver,” he says. “Why should the people up here put up with less than satisfactory service?” 4736 Lazelle Ave. (Just behind McDonalds) RADELET PANY Barristers & Solicitors, Vancouver, B.C.
