Tsimshian natives have started taking their allocation. of 50,000 sockeye and 100,000 pink salmon by selective means. The Kitselas band has also been given a separate allocation of 10,000 sockeye, it’s the second year for the so- called ‘‘homeland fishery’? and organizers are hoping for better results than last year. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans halted the 1992 fishery in the ‘wake of open bick- éring between processors and na- tive groups and a serles of arrests relating toillegalfishsales. _ An experimental fish wheel at Kitselas Canyon proved to be largely ineffective. This time the Tsimshian Tribal Council has trained 15 Tsimshian river guardians who will. work - with DFO on enforcement and monitoring of the fishery. ‘The Tsimshian are using a com- bination of fish wheels, weirs and traps to target the Pinkut and Fulton River runs of hatchery- enhanced sockeye, Those fish return in numbers well above that. required for spawning. The gates are closed once the spawning beds on Babine Lake are full and the thousands of excess fish are left to die outside the spawning grounds. Selective techniques are used to take only those enhanced sockeye — leaving the coho, chinook, wild sockeye and steelhead also moving in the river. Tsimshian Tribal Council presi- dent Art Sterritt said the Tsim- shian fishermen will follow those enhanced sockeye runs up the river, all the way to the top of the Kltselas territory near Cedarvale. Downstream bands will assis! those upstream after the fish have passed by. - *“We'll end up all working to- gether,’” he said. But so far the prices are low, Steritt says, and the processorz- are disinterested. ‘*None of the majors have even nibbled about wanting t to buy fish,”’ he said. 2 SUMMER DAY SEALCOATING. Machines of all sorts were on Hwy. 37 south last week as sections of the road were sealcoated to prevent deterioration. First, asphalt was sprayed onto the surface, followed by an aggregate covering. Sealcoating needs to be done in warm, dry weather, and the sun was com Pletely co-operaive on this searcher ofa day. aa ca: oR TERRACE — One of the world’s leading linguists and a specialist in the Tsimshian Jen- guage has joined the University of Northern B.C, Dr, John Dunn is one of 40 new faculty appointments to UNBC.
