A10- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 10, 2000 Parents still unhappy over new school site AFTER SIX years spent planning to build a new re- placement school for Skeena Junior Secondary, the schaol ‘district is. no closer to offering students 4 new building. than it was years ago. The new 650-student re- placement school is nee- ded because Skeena Junior Secondary, which was built in tie ffties,-is run down and antiquated: The school board voted April:7,:1999 to build the new $11-million Grade 8- 12 school on. the Caledo- nia site, But district sdministra- tors failed to inform the ministry of the’. new school’s site iocation. The ministry originally ap- proved to build the school on the bench or on the pre- sem! Skeena: Junior school site. Bob Park, head of the Bob Park Skeena Junior Parents Ad- visory Committee (PAC) is’ Frustrated the new school is: no closer to being built than il was [wo years ago. Park ‘said the. PAC committee doesn’t want a new Grade 8-12 school built as an addition to Ca- iedonia. He wants the’ re- placement ‘schoo! ta in- clude Grade 8 and 9 stu- dents and built on the cur- rent Skeena school site. “We want exactly what we fave have-on Skeena now,” Park said. He said if the new school is built on the Ca- iedonia site, nat only will students lose their track, but also part.of the soccer fields. He added the traffic will) be too congested © when G80 students are “added to Caledonia. “It will be dangerous with everyone all. in one area.” At a public school board meeting May 3, se- eretary treasurer Marcel Georges said the location of tthe new’ school is still undecided. [t will be up to the education: ministry to decide where the new school will ‘ga, either on the present Skeéna Junior School site or on the Cale- donia site, New bench school gets the green light CONSTRUCTION OF a new $3.3-million elementary school on the bench could begin as early as this summer now that the education ministry has given the school district the official approval to go abead with the project. School district secretary treasurer Mar- cel Georges expects the project to go to tender in June. “I’m aiming for the first shovel to be in the ground in July,” Georges said. “But if we can do it sooner it’s better. We're going to try to speed things up.” George said an architect was hired last year and the school’s design plans are complete. But construction was put on hold be- cause the education ministry was con- fused over where the new Skeena Junior replacement school would be built. It was originally believed the high school would be built on the bench adja- cent to the elementary school. That's now changed with a new plan, approved by. the school district but wait- ittg fof: the“iministry!s. ‘blessing, io put the ast Skeena replacement adjacent to Caledo- nia Senior Secondary. The ministry had wanted the school district to work out a deal with the city on how the water, sewer, paving and lighting expenses could be cost-shared if the new elementary school and new junior sec- ondary school were to be built close toge- ther. All that needs to be completed now is a value analysis review, which will deter- mine whether or not the project will re- main on budget. A cost consultant will also be hired ta review the project with the architect. Gearges expects students to begin classes in the new 250-student school September 2001. The school, which will be smaller than Uplands Elementary, is being built to eli- minale the portables currently needed at Uplands. The school, focated on the Southeast comer of Bailey Street and Soucie Ave- nue, will house 200 elementary students and 50 kindergarten students:. ‘OL COUNTRY PREACHING DON HARRIS CRUSADES Beginning Saturday, May 13, 7:00 Pm 9401 McConnell Ave. seventh-Day Adventist Church Sponsored by The Kermode Friendship “ For further information.
