CITY OS Perr caay thay | Ms. Christine Allen Traffic and Safety Coordinator Hazel Trembath Pareats Group 1252 Paula Place Port Coquitlam, B.C. V3C 2W2 October 2 pL1993. Mr. Sjoquist Assistant Superintendant of Schools Coquitlam School Board 550 Poirier Street Coquitiam, B.C. V3J 6A7 Dear Mr. Sjoquist: It has come to our attention that there are some major safety concems regarding the new access road to Hazel Trembath Elementary School. There are 570 students attending the school, so it follows that this access road which is really an extension of Western Drive, bears an enormous amount of traffic in the form of cars, bicycles, and pedestrians. When Western Drive is extended through to Confederation Drive there will be even more traffic. Furthermore, Eastern Drive Park is also located beside the access road. The speed at which many of the vehicles are traveling is the major concern. On Oct. 13th, radar registered many speeders in this SOK/hr. zone, reportedly one doing 64K/hr. We feel that all of the above constitutes an extremely dangerous situation and that it is only a matter of time before a child is injured or killed. We strongly urge that the following measures be put into place before such a tragedy occurs: ¢ A 30K/hr. sign must be posted. —~ © A stop sign put in place. ° See innit signe and the p We all know that not everyone speed limit signs and the police can't be there everyday. Many children use a path running beside the powerlines which ends at this access road. They must cross the roed to reach the sidewalk on the other side. A crosswalk is needed here including a Children Crossing Sign. In closing, we believe it imperstive that you come to Hazel Trembath C-hool Between Si am and 9:00 am to view this traffic situation yourself. “A picture is worth a thousand words", and it is difficult to adequately describe the enormity of this situation on paper. We trust that you will be appalled by what you see. While you are at the school, we would suggest you check out the gravel parental parking lot and note its' size and awkward accessibility. Both are legitimate causes for concem. ITEM | PAGE 8l
