THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM TO B. R. Kirk, April 27, 1989 City Administrator FROM: ToM. Chong, P. Eng., City Engineer SUBTECT: 1989 Peace Run-International Global) Relay (Public Works Committee Meeting April 25, 1989) RECOMMENDATION: 1. That a letter be forwarded to the Ministry of Highways with copies to the Municipalities of Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Coquitlam and Burnaby advising them of the City's concerns as follows: a. The proposed use of the Lougheed Highway is between the hours of 1230 and 1800 hours. This time period should be advanced such that it will not coincide with the peak PM rush hour traffic. The organizers of the Run should be required to provide their own ambulance service such that the regular ambulance service can be held in reserve to respond to local needs. The Ministry of Highways should grant the same courtesy to municipal re,dests for the use of Lougheed Highway for major municipal sponsored functions such as the May Day Parade. 2. That the City consent to the proposed use of Lougheed Highway for the 1989 Peace Run provided that the above concerns are Satisfactorily addressed. BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: The attached copy of a letter (with enclosure) forwarded to the Peace Run organizers from the Ministry of Highways provides background to this matter. In considering this matter the Committee has several concerns which are reflected in the recommendation. TM. ChongvPv- Eng, City Engineer TMC: dlj attachment 23
