“Dang Xiaoping, premier of oe cat that catches rodents’’, CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Highway condition was deplorable near Kitwanga Dear Sir: T am writing regarding the condition of the local highways and the daily maintenance of these roads, It seems that every winter turns into a major catastrophe for the Northwest. High- way 16 aud Highway 37 are routes for transfer trucks and the conditions of these highways arc not fit to drive even for these trucks. f Is there not enough salt or gravel which keeps the contractor from keeping up the maintenance of the highway? Is. there a competition happening te see wha saves the most money? Are we being put at risk in order to save money? I-had to call an ambulance to lake my daughter to the hospital in Terrace, Follow- ing the three-day stay in Terrace | returned to Kitwanga on Thursday afternoon. Surprise, surprise the roads, as always, were bare and wet from Terrmce to the halfway point, contract held by the Terrace maintenance crew. The road between that point and Kitwanga was icy, bumpy and treacherous, Go local Is there a difference in climate which makes the extreme difference in driving conditions? | don’t think sol In the hour and forty-five minutes it took to drive to Kitwanga from the halfway point, 1 did not see one truck from the Kitwanga Inaitenance department. The only thing | saw was a pick-up truck in the ditch. These maintenance crews, especially the contractor should be reminded that there are school buses running every day be- tween Gitanyow and Hazelton and the up- keep of the highways should be a concern — there was one accident already in which the children were hurt. The governments provides the money for the maintenance of these highways and the contractor bids for the contract. If the con- tractor is worried about saving money he should not bid for a contract he can’t do properly. It is bad enough that we have to live with unsafe drivers and drunk drivers. We don’t need the risk of icy highways. , “". Debbie Good Kitwanga B.C. - G. Many labourers, contractors and equipment operators have been unem- ployed or underemployed for much of the year. Now, in the winter, when work is even scarcer, it is particularly sad and upset- ting to see local businesses using out of town con- tractors for snow removal. These are the same businesses that:rely on the patronage of the employed and unemployed — year- around residents of Terrace to support their businesses.
