Riverboat Queen Vesta Douglas steps - down, mystery ~ . captain in wings — * Vesta Douglas: Always with us in heart. Contributed by Mary Ann Burdett After having reigned over River- “boat Days since its inception with dignity, charm and the deep care and concern for her loyal subjects ‘that comes only with true nobility, - Vesta Douglas has given up her throne. ‘ - It is with deep regret that the Riverboat Days Society has _accepted Vesta’s notice of abdica- tion. We will all miss her logical thinking, her flashes of brilliance, her constant humour and her down-to-earth acceptance and “handling of situations as they arose. The only way this abdica- tion has been tolerable is with the assurance Vesta has given the Society that she will always be with us in heart and will be avail- able in an advisory capacity. It is with love and heartfelt thanks for a job as well done as all jobs _ Vesta undertakes are well done, that the Riverboat Days committee says farewell to monarchy. - Riverboat Days 1991 and future Riverboat Days celebrations will come under the command of a "Riverboat Captain". The Captain will be "hired" by the committee at gieat expense (the honour of the tile and all the involvement poss- ible). The choice of the Riverboat Days Society for this position is a person wito is very familiar to the people of Terrace, someone who has done a great deal for our com- munity, someone we will all be proud to have as our "Captain", someone about whom you will be ‘hearing more in the next couple of weeks and someone whose identity will remain a secret for the _ moment. But watch for further announcements and watch for his of her appearance in the parade. The parade that is being marshalied this year by Joan Davis-McKenzie is well on it way to being fantastic. There will be floats (possibly 20) sponsored by such places as the City of Terrace, Kitsumkalum Band, Royal Cana- dian Legion, Co-op, Inn ‘of the West, Kermode Friendship Centre and B.C. Tel. Ministry of Forests has entered a float, a fire truck and a fire fighting crew; the vintage cars will be there; the Miss Ter- race Contestants with their beauty and charm will be parading; the new Kermodei Lions Club will be — marching along with the Commun- ity Band, the Rube Band, the Legion Colour Party and represen- tation from the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, the Child Development Centre, the RCMP and our local Fire Departments. The Skeena Square Dancers will be in full swing complete with music and caller, and this is only a - portion of what we can expect to see. The parade lines up on Park Avenue from Eby St. to Sparks Starting at 10 a.m., marches off on Eby to Lakelse at 11 am. and winds up at the Legion. Entry forms are available from the Legion, the Tourist Information Centre and at Skeena Broadcasters — the closing date for entries is July 29. Get yours now and enter the fun. All necessary information is printed on the entry forms. It is going to be a great parade, come out and be a part of it — if you can’t be a participant, come and be a spectator. The Skeena Shrine Clowns who will be cavort- ing along the entire route, would make it worth your while all by themselves and there will be more -—— much more. See you al the parade!
