VoL, III, SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1914, Notwithstanding the wide financial depression, which hes eiecked new enterprises the world over, the year 1914 is opening with the brightest of prospects for British Columbia, of the province show no diminution of ¢ onfidence in its future, ard face the coming year without misgiving, “The certain compieticn of the Grand Trunk Pacific during the coming summer will great’y atcelerate the development of the great. ‘Central and Northern Interior districts, bringing new people and new capital to the many mining and agricultural sections, of which the Hazelton district is, perhaps, “the most promising. The inauguration of the train service from the Atlantic to the Pacific will give great impctus to many industries in the country tributary to this town. Other sections of the province will benefit by the linking up of the Canadian Northern, ‘which will probably eventuate’ before the end of the year, while “the car rying out of some of the - railway plang which are under consideration is likely to open up new dis- tricts as yet untouched by the hand of progress. ; ° The announcement that the Yarrows, the famous English ship- bailders, are to takeover the Bullen shipyards at Esquimalt on February 1 means that this province is from now on to be reckon- ed as an important factor in another great industr i while the con- current announcement of the Dominion government’s is.tention to construct a four-million-dollar dry-dock at the same point but con- firms the general belief that British Columbia will henceforth take a prominent place in maritime construction, It is also learned, on high authority, that the Dominion govern- ment, at the session which opens next week, will introduce a meas- ure granting a subsidy for shipbuilding in Canada. Whether this will form part of the naval policy, or whether it will be made a saparate bill is not yet known, but in either. case it is certain to meet with the support of Canadians, irrespective of par ty. Doubt- less the assurance of sueh legislation was a factor in secuiing the The people] Yarrow enterprise for British Columbia, The Pacific Highway" 7 . * ‘That within two years automo- bile stages will bein regular op: eration over’ at. least. halt ‘thé distance hetween Seattle and Point, Barrow, the most northerly point in Alaska, i is the confident prediction of A, E, Todd, ot ‘Victoria, a well-known... ‘Good Roads enthusiast ad ‘the first advocate of the Pacific Highway. Mr, Todd says: ‘Point Barrow is some hundréds of miles: with-|, in the Arctic Circle, and is within a few miles of being the farthest north point on the American con- tinent. The only settlement of any kind in the vicinity is a re-, ‘lief station for whaling ships maintained by the United States Government, “It ig still, of course, uncertain that the Pacific Highway -will ever actually reach this. far Northern point, yet it is most interesting to note the. actual; ‘progress that is being made in the linking together of the Paci- tic Highway route to the North, and to consider whether it is within the range of possibility - that the Pacific Highway will at some future date extend to Point Barrow. “Ié will come as a surprise to _most people undoubtedly to learn that well within the next two years fully half of the North ‘to: the South distance between Point Barrow and Seattle will be cover- ed by roads, on which automobile stages will be in daily operation. | . “Tf the distince bétween.
