—t Bee INFO-PARENTS steak apecaanicoe ee THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESCHOOL AND DAYCARE Very often at preschool or higher levels of education Francophone schools welcome children who do not master French but their parents are eligible under Section 23 of the Charter. Tominimize this problem Francophone preschools or daycares play an important role. It is the opportunity to ensure a continuity between home and Francophone school during the main years of a_ child’s FO ang linguistic and cultural development and who speaks French. Itisthe opportunity to learn the language and to develop a cultural identity for a child who speaks little or no French at all. DID YOU KNOW IT? A person intelligence develops more between the age of 0 to 4 than during the 16 following years. When the appropriate conditions required for apprenticeship of a mother tongue are not there and the apprenticeship of the language of the majority is encouraged, the child of a minority is at risk of loosing his/her identity and having poor self respect. Language should be stimulated at birth says Laurence Lantin in her book “Apprendre a parler a l’enfant de moins de six ans”. However, 3 to 4 is the best age to stimulate linguistic development. It is the best time for the child to discover the structure and power of the language. When going to a Francophone preschool or a daycare the child has the opportunity to: ¢ Make friends and learn to live within a group. * Have access to games and activities that may not been available at home. ¢ Participate to activities adapted to ci’ HOW TO GET READY stimulating all the aspects of personality (intelligence, logic, aptitude, emotions, and so on...). ¢ Evolve ina Francophone surrounding with an opportunity to master the language, toenrichone’s vocabulary and become comfortable enough to take pleasure in speaking French. ¢ Realize that French isnotonly Mam’s or Grand Dad’s language but also language of the educator, the other children and their parents. ¢Get ready for the Francophone school. g PRESCHOOL SERVICES ARE DEVELOPING IN THE PROVINCE...
