Moved by Alderman Ranger: Seconded by Alderman Gates: That as recommended by the Building and Protection Committee, February 28th, 1980 the request from the Casa Roma Restaurant for a flashing sign at the shopping centre at the corner of Lougheed Highway and Shaughnessy Street, be denied. Defeated ยป Aldermen Gates, Keryluk and Ranger voted in favour of the resolution, Prior to the question being called on the foregoing resolution Alderman Ranger expressed his concerns regarding allowing flashing slgns at this location and in the City generally. Aldermen Mabbett and Traboulay spoke in favour of the request stating that the attraction of business to the City should be encouraged. Alderman Keryluk advised the Sign Regulation By-law No. 166] should be amended if tt Js Council's wish to approve Clashing signs and expressed bls opposition to dealing with an Individual application. Aldermen Gates and Ranger advised of their opposition to the request and support of the Committee's report. The owner of the Casa Roma Restaurant was present and it was the general opinion of Caouncdl expressed by a show of hands that he be allowed to speak and he then proceeded to do so stating that he required an adequate sign to advertise his business visible from the Lougheed Highway and that he would not allow his present sign ta be removed to facilitate planned highway construction until a new one could be installed. Alderman Mabbett spoke expressing his concern that construction of the right turn dane should net be delayed. Moved by Alderman Trabou lay: Seconded by Alderman Mabbetrs That the Budlding and Protection Committe and members of start review the Sign Regulation By-law No, 1661 with a view to permitting flashing signs in commercial areas along the Lougheed Highway and along Shaughnessy Street.
