The June 15 signing in Vancouver connects the Chinese Academy of For- estry with the B.C. Council of Forest Industries (COFD, the University of B.C. and a Canadian woo- d-use development agency called Forintek Canada. ‘It follows on three agreements signed in China last fall to open that ' country up to Canadian wood, says Paul Newman, an Official from COFI, ~ “This is very much an evolitioiary process,” said Newiman of: the:gradual but consistent-moves to boost sales of Canadian lumber. The June 15 agreement calls for the exchange of information regarding the fire safety, structural and durability of wood frame buildings, training Chinese people in B.C. in wood construction so they can train people back home and market research. “We're out to prave the strength and versatility of the quality of Canadian products,” said Newman. While there’s no way a Chinese market will ever displace the huge Ameri- can one for B.C. wood pro- ducts, it will help provide another avenue of securing revenues, he added. One of the first steps has been to develop a building code using wood, Newman continued. “They're not as exper- ienced as we are,” he said. “Most of their technology is 1950s from Russia.” Right now, the vast ma- jority of Chinese residen- tial and other construction uses concrete. B.C. lumber producers have their eye on the growing middie. class in China and its appetite for single family detached homes as a market oppor- tunity. Newman, who has vi- sited China half a dozen times in the last two years, says the potential for home construction is huge. “You visit them and they are all made out of concrete,” he said of sin- gle family homes being built. Kitimat takes on Alcan THE CONTROVERSY over whether Alcan should use its hydro power to create aluminum or sell it receives an airing tomorrow at the B.I. Steak and Seafraod Grill. District of Kitimat municipal manager Trafford Hall is speaking at a Terrace and District Chamber or Com- merce luncheon which begins at 11:45 a.m. Hall has become the Kitimat council’s point man in an increasingly high octane debate between it and Alcan. Kitimat council fears that the more power Alcan sells, the less it will have to smelt aluminum. That then means it needs fewer people at its smelter. Alcan has re- jected the idea that it wants out of the aluminum busi- ness in favour of becoming an electric utility.
