Roaster catches fire

THE GROUND WORKS Coffee Co. had a close call
Saturday Feb, 26 when its coffee bean roaster burst
into flames around 11:45 p.m. and filled the shop
with smoke, The stainless stecl roaster is still func-
tional and the store suffered some damage.

“Basically, it just-smelis like roasted coffee beans,”
said deputy fire chief Rick Owens.

The fire started when beans in the shop’s roasting
machine overheated, Staff used a portable fire extin-
guisher to stifle most of the flames but the fire was
completely extinguished when 21 firefighters showed
up to answer the general alarm.

Firefighters then used a positive pressure fan to re-
move any lingering smoke and limit damage.

Watch for moose

RCMP are warning drivers to watch for moose on
Highway 37 south to Kitimat after 4 family escaped
serious injury Sunday, Feb. 27.

The family was travelling south from Terrace to
the hot springs when their vehicle hit a moose that
had stepped onto the highway at the bottom of airport
hill.

The female driver cut her face and suffered a sore
neck. Her three passengers were not harmed. Their
vehicle suffered extensive damage. The moose had to
be put down as a result of its injuries.

According to ICBC, the collision is just one of at
least 12 reported vehicle moose accidents on highway
37 to Kitimat since last July. Most impacts happen
during the evening when visibility is reduced.

Two busted for pot

after vehicle search

TERRACE RCMP have charged two lower mainland
men with drug offences.

Dean Aron Ziyone, 32, of Aldergrove and Edward
Earl Zimmer, 30 of Maple Ridge were travelling
south on Hwy37 to Kitimat when an RCMP officer
pulled them over for speeding Feb. 26.

The officer smelled pot and searched their vehicle,
finding 90 grams of marijuana and $340.

“The marijuana was packaged in a way that was
consistent with trafficking,” said Cust. Gary Swan-
son. Both men have been charged with possession of
acontrolied substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Thieves strike dealership
TERRACE RCMP are investigating a Thornhill Mot-
ors’ customer who expressed interest in a truck that
disappeared the following day,

The woman, had been in to view the truck and sev-
eral others Thursday, Feb. 17, told a sales person she
would return Friday. The truck disappeared that
night. ;

Sales people attempted to call her at the Northern
Mator Inn, where she said she was staying, but staff
there did not have anyone registered by that name.

_ The truck is a green fully loaded 1997 GMC four-
wheel drive with a standard cab. The truck had pink
detailing and was listed at $28,995.

It is believed the thieves got into to the truck by
smashing the back window.

The dealership did not report any other damage and
no other vehicles were stolen. The robbery marks the
second theft of a vehicle at Thornhill Motors in about
four years.

“We're lucky it hasn’t happened in a long time,”
said manager Leo de Jong, “Once every four years is
enough.”
