public-speaking com-
petition for 4-H members
recently took place in
Burns Lake, ,with com-
petitors. from Terrace,
Vanderhoof, and Burns
Lake itself.

Two, seniors and one
ju or. ‘from each of the
_fonk: districts joined

together to provide a very
entertaining afternoon of
competition, =.

In-order to. qualify for
the regional contest, each
of the contestants had to
first wih at thelr own club
eval and then come out

ni:top. of the tough
com tition between club
representatives at the
distrlot level. The Skeena

district champs who
competed at Burns Lake
were, junior, Heidi
Mueller, representing the

‘Cedars 4H Beef Club,

and in the senior
category, Krista and
Erica Tycho representing
the Skeena Livestock
Club. *

Of the 12 finalists, the
speakers who placed in
the Regional competition
were; junior category
(under 13), ist place,
Monica Strimbold; 2nd
place, Monica Hutt and
3rd place Heidi Mueller.

In the senior category
(13 to 19 year olds), there
were the following
winners; 1st place, Judith
Reltsma, 2nd place, Jean
MeFee, ard place, Krista

Tycho,

Seniors were also rated
on two-minute = im-
promptu speeches on the
subject of the Olympics.

All talks showed
evidence of extremely
thorough research and
long hours of practice in
presentation, as befits
members of this widly-
respected youth
organization.

The difficult judging
duties were performed by
Bill Chalmers, John
Barth and Jennifer
Mayea. Graeme John-
stone, District
Agriculturist acted as
time keeper while Irene
Borysowich was master
of ceremonies. —
