The Local also balloted the crews still in camp and the results were announced later. One of Abata’s aides was blown into the street by the explosion and doctors say he probably would lose at least one leg. Another aide and two passersby were injured by flying glass and other debris. Abata wrested control of the cab drivers over Joey Glimco, a reputed associate of gangsters and head of Teamsters Local 777. After Abata’s team defeated Clin- co’s forces, Abata merged with the Seafarers Interna- tional Union. -He has been successful in maintaining control of the cabbies in numerous election showdowns with the Team- sters.
