The name Yuri Gagarin, 27 year old father of two small daughters, flashed across the world’s headlines Tuesday and Wednesday and wrote a new chapter in human history. ““Greatest Achievement of Man” World science has hailed the achievement, of the Soviet Union as opening up a tremendous new era in which man will conquer space. “The greatest achievement in the history of mankind,” was the way British scientist Sir Bernard Lovell, head of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, described the Soviet achievement. Announcement of the Soviet achievement came Tues- day night (Vancouver time) after a day of speculation, First to break the story of the successful launching of a man in space was the British Daily Worker. On Monday, following publication of this story, the world waited breathlessly, expecting the official announce- ment to come from the Soviet news agency Tass at any moment. The Tass announcement reported that the spaceship weighing five ton took off with Major Yuri Gagarin aboard at 9:07 a.m. Moscow time. It rounded the globe in 89.1 minutes. Altogether the first spaceman in history was up 108 minutes.
