Duplessis moves toward fascism —MONTREAL. IGEROUS, long steps to- ward fascist strangulation of democracy and labor have been taken by Premier Maurice Du- plessis of Quebec. To terrorize and break the la- bor unions he persecutes the tex- tile workers’ Parent and Azelus Beaucage; they are sentenced to two years hard labor in prison because they fought for higher wages and dem- ocracy in the textile mills. To silence the voice of the free press Duplessis acts as judge, jury and executioner and padlocks the labor newspaper Combat because it fights for justice for Quebec's common people, for democracy and peace. ' To prepare for new “frame-ups and provocations against the la- bor movement, Duplessis, with the servile aid of the big business press, conjures up the most in- credible “plots” and lays them at the door of the labor movement. These are serious signals to every Canadian labor organiza- tion, to every Canadian who cher- _ ishes justice, liberty and democ- racy. Duplessis’s savage two-year prison sentence upon union or ganizers, his padlocking of Com- bat, his provocations against the Labor-Progressive Party are mat- ters which much seriously con- cern every Canadian. ai lho e *OR the past two years Duples- sis has vainly tried to break the spirit and the organization of all who fight for the needs of la- bor and the people. He has declared illegal every ene of the militant strikes of Quebec's workers. His police have viciously attacked their pioket ‘lines with tear-gas and _ clubs. Harsh jail sentences have been meted out to strikers and union leaders. He has blasted and branded as ‘a “Bolshevik conspiracy” every | VALUES trade union struggle. His police have terrorized every public hall owner to the point where freedom of assemblage has been denied to the Labor- Progressive Party in Montreal and Quebec City. You may be sure that the la- sor movement and all friends of justice, democracy and peace in Quebec will redouble their fight to expose and eventually defeat Duplessis. And, in every other Canadian province, and in par- liament it is the duty of all who cherish Canada to raise their voices against these savage acts and to take action in unity with French-Canada to expose and combat this tyrant who has set his feet on. the road to fascism. Quebec needs justice and dem- ocracy, the protection of hard- won trade union rights in order that her workers may resist the” bitter exploitation of the monop- oly trusts, in whose behalf Du- plessis acts to try and crush trade unionism. . ‘fight must go on to win wage equality for Quebec's workers. Freedom of the press must be protected. Every Canadian who stands for this ideal must demand of Duplessis that he lift the ban on Combat and repeal his infam- ous padlock law. The fight for this requires that every support be given to Combat to continue its work of spreading the truth in Quebec, of organizing the Que- bec people to resist the attacks of Duplessis and the trusts against the living standards and the civil rights of the Quebec people. In Quebec the Labor-Progres- sive . Party, many CCF-ers, im- portant trade unions, and other champions of, civil liberties are battling and uniting to cope with these new attacks. Pierre Gelinas, editor of Combat, has declared that his newspaper will defy Du- plessis and continue publication. — We ask readers of the Pacific Tribune to wire or write to Pre-. mier Duplessis, Quebec City, Que- bec, and to their M.P.’s at Ottawa «2. demanding: ! : Freedom for Madeleine Parent and Azelus Beaucage, lifting of the ban on Combat and repeal of the padlock law. Snow denounces Chiang AMERICAN foreign policy in relation to China is “stupid,” accord- ing to a statement made by Edgar Snow, noted author and an associate editor of the Saturday Evening Post. The statement, released in New York last week by the Committee for a Democratic Far Eastern Policy, pointed out that the only way Chiang Kai-shek’s regime could be saved would be through making China an American colony. Snow, who is now in the Far East, warns that American funds will line the pockets of Chinese “gangsters, profiteers and blatk market operators.” “There is nothing more stupid on the record of our foreign policy” said Snow, “than present American support for the dicta- _ torship of Chiang Kai-shek, in war against the Chinese people. “Nothing less than a major American military operation, carried out by American troops and costing billions of dollars, to end in making a colony of China, can save this hopelessly corrupt regime. Even General Marshall knows that. “Then why are we wasting more millions on a cause we know is indefensible? Is it the road toward world leadership im peace and progress to line the pockets of Chinese gangsters, profiteers and black market operators? We must stop adding to the misery of people who never did us any. harm or we shall surely suffer for it in a day of reckoning.” Ae HIGH QUALITY LOGGERS AND WORK BOOTS : HAND-MADE JOHNSON’S .-BOOTS Phone MArine 761% 68 WestCordovaStreet - - - - THE PENDER BOWLING ALLEYS FIVE AND 10 PINS Open Noon Till Midnight — Monday to Saturday /Open and League Play Invited 339 West Pender Street 3 EAST END SAA UNION DRIVERS HA. 0334 Fully _24-Hour (Insured Service 613 East Hastings, Vancouver STANTON & MUNRO BARRISTERS, SOLICITORS, NOTARIES . As we understand it the principal issue in this action was whether or not these members of the I.T.U. had conspired to injure the Southam Company Limited.
