THE CORPORATION CF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM TO: B.R. Kirk, April 7, 1989 City Administrator FROM: Environmental Protection Committee SUBJECT: G.V.R.D. Air Quality Monitoring Stations in Port Coquitlam Recommendation: That Council request the G.V.R.D. to upgrade their seasonal ozone monitoring Station located at Sun Valley Park to sample a full range of air quality parameters on a year round basis, Background and Comments: The G.V.R.D. currently operates two air quality monitoring statiaus in the City. One at 2150 Wilson Avenue samples particulates once every 6 days on a year round basis. The other in Sun Valley Park samples ozone concentrations only between April and September of each year. During its périod of operation, this station records data on a paper chart. Many G.V.R.D. stations in the region telemeter data to their central computer which gives them real time, on-line data. The G.V.R.D. is planning to install telemetry equipment at the Sun Valley station and to add sulphur dioxide sampling capability. The Committee feels that there should be at least one station in the City which monitors a full range of air quality parameters. The additional parameters include nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride/fluoride, particulate metals such as lead, copper, etc. and haze co-efficients. The City would have to provide a 2.5 meter x 5.0 meter space for the station at a location where power and telephone could be hooked up. M.C. Farnworth, Committee Chairman
