test of the Campbell government's proposed cuts
to public services.

MLA’s office target of march

“SOCIAL WORKERS and others worried about coming
cuts to social services and to government workers mar-
ched at noon today to the office of Skeena Liberal MLA
Roger Harris. ‘

The march is tne latest in a series of events by a
community coalition opposed to the impacts of coming
provincial budget reductions.

Harris was scheduled to be in Victoria today at a
meeting of the Treasury Board, the body which is in
charge of provincial spending.

He normally spends Fridays in the riding, a more or
less standing order given to all Liberal MLAs.

“We want to get our message across,” he said.

“There is going to be an impact on the people in this
community who receive our services and on the workers
who will disappear and there will be an impact on the
local economy.”

Although the full extent of government cuts are not
yet known, Philpott said it was important to know that
only services for children are protected in legislation.

“Services, for instance, for developmentally hand-
icapped adults aren’t,” said Philpott.

“Non-statutory services can be chopped. It happened
in 1982,” he added.
