over what was being used before. Keeping a run-
way clean of slush and show after snow plows have
done their part is an important part of airport safaty.

New sweeper welcomed

SOME AGING runway-clearing equipment is being re-
placed at the Terrace-Kitimat Airport just in time for
winter.

The first of two new runway sweepers arrived at the
airport in mid-September.

The $159,000 Quebec-built sweeper has a large rata-
ting brush similar to a street sweeper.

It’s towed behind a dump truck and picks up slush and
snow that primary snow plows leave behind, explained
airport operations foreman Lane Mitchell.

The idea, he said, is to create a nice clean asphalt
surface for landings.
Also expected to arrive is a new snow blower, Mil-

‘chell said.

A total of $570,000 from the federal government’s
Airports Capital Assistance Program is covering 95 per
cent of the cost of the new equipment.

‘Airport society president Frank Hamilton credited the
labbying efforts of Terrace, Kitimat and local chambers
of commerce helped secure the money,
