B16 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 19, 2000 —— ONE OF the younger competitors gets a helping hand at ihe July 9 Totem Saddle Club gymkhana at the Thornhill Community Fairgrounds. The event drew a record number of competitors and spectators, who enjoyed the warm weather, sunshine and action. Record turnout at Thornhill Gymkhana THE TOTEM Saddle Club had one of its largest lurn- outs ever at the Gymkhana on July 9, as riders raced around barrels, picked up flags, jumped over scurries and charged to the finish line in an effort to oulrace themselves and each other. Not only were. there more horses and riders; but the crowd turnout was strong too as spectators flocked to the Thornhill Community Fairgrounds to see the diverse field, Participants ranged in age from- about four-in-the peewee class, to a few participants in their fifties. The first event of the day was the keyhole, where riders would take their horses down a short, narrow stretch between white lines, turn around, and come back to the fin- ish line. White dust was flying as riders had some trouble with control, but some in the masters and seniors classes finished with strong times. Lori Howard with Legs topped the event with a time of 9.716 seconds, fol- lowed closcly by Dan Muller and Marsh clocking in at 9.908. Saddle Club President Lyn Lavoie on Gizmo,. had the lowest lime in flag- picking, where participants had to snatch a flag from a barzel while mounted, do a NOTABLE TIMES Gymkhana duly 9, 2000 Keyhole: Lori Howard 9.716 Dan Muller 9.908 Lyn Lavoie 10.042 Flag Picking Lyn Lavoie 11.445 Dan Muller 11.929 Margie Rempel 13.279 Figure 8 Danita Petch 19.84 Lyn Lavoie 20.12 Nadine McKeand 20.536 Scurries Amy Hayduk 11.650 Lyn Lavoie 12.371 Lori Howard 12.481 Barrels ; Terri Stewart 16.877 Lyn Lavoie 16.912 Danita Petch 17.48 quick figure eight around a barrel 150 feet away, and toss the flag inlo the origi- nal barrel, before crossing the finish line. Lyn Lavoie on Gizmo, Danita Petch and Shady, and Houston's Terri Stewart on Cody all had finishing times of within a second of each other. The next gymkhana sla- ted for July 30. Organizers are expecting an equal or ’ better turnout if the wealh- er cooperates.
