A6 - The Terrace Standard, Social Dear Sir: I listened to a news report which said M.P. Mike Scott referred to the Sierra Club and other such groups as en- vironmental terrorists. The head of this organization is now demanding an apology from Mr. Scott. ] want this person to listen up aid listen up good. The province of B.C, is in total chaos thanks in large part to the efforts of people like yourself and the NDP government which strongly supports your. type. of-orga- nization. De Sc many people who belong to these clubs are ‘professional-type yuppies who work for government, or as school teachers, Jaw- yers, actors, etc. — people who make big money year round, year in and year out. These people have not only the free time, but also the money to go out and af- ford nice vacations with their families. They can come from the US, Germany, Japan, or where ever. When they manage to shut down a logging operation they are shutting down the livelihoods of dozens and sometimes hundreds of people. These people may have lived in the area for decades, These are the people who put in the roads, bridges, and riprap that made accessible the very region in question. ‘These loggers and their fa- thers made accessible the very areas that you environ- nietitalists are now able ta drive to and enjoy the beau- ty. Guys like Rob Brown, who is always condemning industry, but in each column he writes he does not say how he arrived at the spol he is savouring. He doesn’t mention the well-maintained logging road that he drave 50 miles over to get there. He doesn’t mention the fossil-fuel burn- ing boat he rode. on for seven hours to arrive at the beantiful Queen Charlotte Islands, Do you environmentalists ever stop to consider the hu- tan factor or what your ef- forts today are- costing society tomorrow, There is nothing more I would like than to have the president of the Sierra Club or Greenpeace come and live with me and my friends terrorists i mepemennaenir neste tees pe | CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag who, I am proud te say, are honest, taxpaying citizéns when. they are able to find employnient. THIS GOES BEYOND PARTY LINES Christians across Canada have an opportunity - right now - to strike a blow for freedom of conscience. Saskatchewan Reform MP Maurice Vellacott has introduced a private members’ bill - Bill C- 461 - which would protect health care workers and students from discrimination on the basis of their religious convictions about human life. Right now, students ore sometimes not granted -admission into programs . of study in medicine . because they do not - believe in abortion or euthanasia, Nurses have been dismissed (or, mare often, denied promotion) because they refuse on the basis of conscience to = participate in procedures that would end human life, Maurice Vellacott’s bill, if passed, would make it a crime to refuse to admit a student .te medical school; to fire, refuse to promote, or deny membership in a professional association, to. a doctor or nurse wha refused, for reasons of religious convictions, fo participate in procedures to terminate humen life. The bill is an important one. It is needed to shelter the freedom of religion guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms against professional bodies and so called human right tribunals’ which attempt to force medical students and health care personnel into the straightjacket of political correctness. Whet can you do about it? Call your Member of Parliament, no matter what party he or she belongs to and state that you want to see Bill C- 461 become law PLEASE DO IT TODAY. Wear a Every Saturday come on down to have a chonce at helmet. Dear Sir: I was very pleased to read about Mathieu LeClere’s suceess in downhill skiing (The Perrace Standard, March 10, 1999,) I was especially interested in his comment that he credits his racing helmet for saving his skull after taking out a racing gate head first. I know that helmets are mandatory for racers but [ would like to raise some awareness about the impor- tance of helmets for all skiers. School aged children are a vulnerable group because many children may not have been exposed to skiing as a sport. Dr. Bob Cadman of Whistler, B.C. studied school ski programs at Blackcomb Mountain, He found that students skiing in © their school ski program have twice the rate of injury as those not skiing with their school. There..are a number of steps that can be taken to minimize the risk of injury. Helmets remain the proven equipment that reduces death and injury. If adults think they are at low risk for injury, they only need to ask the families of Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy. Both were experl- enced skiers who dicd last winter after hitting trees. For more information on preventing head injurics, contact your local health unit, or ski patrol and -of course, Wear a helmet, Ester Brisch, Public Health Nurse, North West Health Unit, Terrace, B.C. winning a trip for two to Mexico.
