Crews to aid Ontario EIGHT FOREST fire fighters from Terrace were called out to northem Onlario last Thursday to batile the wild fires threatening residents in Timmins. While rain was in the fore-. cast for Onlario, it will most likely be actompanied by thunderstorms, with dry hot weather to follow — the right factors for a hot bed of wild fire activity. It’s not wmusual for B.C. ctews to be called out of province, explained North- ———Ee————— Eee The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 18, 1997 - A13 are hospitalized and 250 die each year duc to uninten- tional injuries. Eighty per cent of injuries to children under age five happen in the home. The leading cause of hos- pitalizations = are — falls, poisonings, scalds, drown- ing, choking and burns. The majorily of those injuries are predictable and prevent- able. Representatives from B.C, Children’s Hospital will be giving tours through the safe house, and giving parents and grandparents tips on how to keep their children safe. Each visitor will receive a free copy of Safe Start’s Guide to Home Safety and will be eligible to win a variety of donated prizes. That could range from putting locking devices an windows to kitchen safety. “Parents arent always aware,’’ she says. ‘‘For ¢x- ample Pine Sol and apple juice look identical to a youngster.” If parents want additional information they can ‘also call 1-800-663-1553, or their local health unit. west fire centre communica- tions officer Stacey Rousell. The crew will most likely remain in Ontario until the eid of the month, but that’s not ta say that B.C.’s forests will go unprotected. “It’s very unlikely that a huge bleze will break out now becapse of the wet weather,’’ said Rousell. Most members of the 20- unit crew based in Kitimal remain on standby, FROM FRONT Unemployables get less money “by the time it was done I’d be 60 years old and I wouldn’t necd it.”’ Rosswood resident William Friesen is also angry about the changes. Forty years of hard work in the bush has left him with crippling arthritis and osteoporosis. He’s been unable to work for the last five years. Friesen has already applied to be considered in the disability benefits category, and has been turned down. “T got a letter last week that pretty well states you have to be in a wheel- chair to get the benefits,’’ he said, fOr TERRACE INN CRAZY TOONEY SUNDAYS AT GIGS Noon to Midnight with the best dance music in town starting al 6:00 p.m. Augies Lounge Saturday “Jam Night” ARE Friesen, now 57, started working as a faller in the forest industry when he was just 14 years old, He worked steadily up until five years ago when old injuries started to catch up with him.
