The BC centre is based out of the BC Women’s Hos- pital in Vancouver, and includes communily partners across the province. UNBC will have the northern of- fice, and research there will be concentrated on the unique cultural, geographic and economic dynamcis faced by women living in Canada’s northern regions. “Research will be centred around improving the health status of women who live in remote, rural and northem areas, and whose health concems may be complicated by geographic isolation, race, abilities, lack of access to women-centred care, and other is- sues,”’ says professor Barbara [saac. The BC Centre of Excellence is one of tive across the country which have received $2 million fram Health Canada, Airline people getiing earful A TASK FORCE looking into airline service in the northwest met with repre- sentatives from three car- riers recently, The reps from Air B.C, Canadian Airlines Interna- tional and Central Mountain Air were in Terrace to hear complaints about high air- fares and poor service. Round-trip airfare to Van- couver is going up by $20 today. Task force chair Joanne Monaghan says that the meeting was useful. ‘It wasn'ta bitch-session,”’ she says. “It was actually very productive,”’ The group discussed the possibility of airlines using smaller planes and flying direct 19 Vancouver, instead of first landing in Prince Rupert, That would reduce fares by some 20 per cent. Another topic was food. Providing, a meal or snack on board adds about $12 to every ticket. The group sug- gested taking that off the licket-price, and instead giving travelers a place to purchase food on their own. The group also discussed lower fares for emergency medical reasons, family fares, chartering and in- creasing the forgiveness pe- riod for through-fares for those frequent times when weather delays could mean missed connecting flights. The group will meet again in March to see if the air- lines have made any head- way with the ideas.
