B8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 13, 1991 City considers G - forestry projects — Terrace city council is currently exploring a couple of forest-related - options. They have asked city administration to apply for grant funding for a Terrace Watershed Management Study. This doesn’t necessarily mean ‘logging our watershed, notes alder- man Ruth Hallock, just studying the options. At a Jan. 12 council "Think Tank" session at Mount Layton Hot Springs, however, it ‘was suggested that watershed enhancement and selective logging might be on the agenda. In another outstanding issue, council has asked their Forestry Advisory Commission to identify a local group or organization that would. be willing to undertake a site investigation and development strategy for a demonstration- research forest and museum. Coun- cil only offered one guideline for the study, the fact they have already identified the Kitsumkalum Mountain area as a good potential site for such a project. Council’s "Think Tank” offers a little more insight into the potential | of this idea. It was suggested there | that an "Operational Research ther Forest" would provide an educa- |= tional opportunity for Northwest |. Community College or possibly | the University of Northem B.C.’s * "Forestry Faculty". One other forestry-related "Think: | Tank" idea relates to recycling. It was suggested that local sawmills produce 100 tons of hog fuel per day and by. combining this, organic waste from the city’s landfill site, waste nitrogen from the Ocelot methanol plant and sludge from our sewage treatment plant, @ marketable product — dirt — could be produced. It would be, however, pretty sophisticated dirt, ‘something like potting soil. The idea dovetails with another A dollar a tree from last season's Christmas tree sal made up a donation to the R.E. of $420, foundation representative M. Lee Foundation CT Marlene Webber says she's pleased for the cause.
